Plastic Yamaha JA5002

Here are old images found on the german eBay some years ago (iIRC) with JA-5002s in them - yes, these are huge things !

I have no idea if the man behind the NS-1000 and NS-10, Akira Nakamura, was behind those as well... but I really wonder how these sounded.

Thanks all ... Incredible Design

Never saw these before .. I'm a little surprised they are not mirrored pairs .. even more surprised that something this unusual is not featured more often

Real piece of history there

You just have to know what they sound like don't you?

In the auction, they are raw drivers, while in Axel's photos, they are in a kind of frame. Do these need specialized gear to operate properly? Thanks for what ya'll have posted so far...

The frame is the speaker ... infinite baffle .. only its not infinite (it has sides)so in a room situation the rear wave mixes with the front wave .. a lot depends on the size of the room bigger the better?? & away from walls .. some favour a corner location to emulate a horn ... performance as I understand it is totally room dependant

Efficiency if I remember correct is I think one of the most efficient speaker types you can get so you would only need a very small amp to drive this speaker type ... class A valve category

Always thought of making one & should be the simplest of all to make but I don't trust the theory myself ... better to have the rear wave discharge to another space

Edit : Apologies my Mistake The Type is a Panel Speaker Open Baffle design

About JA-5002,JA-5001,JA6002,JA-6001 and more

My first experience to write this Org. from JAPAN.

I'm very famillier to these White Big Speakers.
The Variation of this Plastic Flat Speakers are at least four (Bigger model),
and a couple of or more medium model.

All model have Aluminium diecast frame and pressed Styrene foam.
The main purpose of development was a speaker for the electronic organ.
The speaker system was developed as the result.
Speaker model........Big Ear / NS-20,NS-30,NS-330,NS-370
Square with Tweeter in the frame/NS-15
Electronic organ.......D-2B,D3,D3R and more

My Friend have NS-370(Big Floor type speaker) and recently I mended.
NS-370 uses JA-6002 for Low, JA-3053 for Mid and JA-0506 for High.
But JA-6002 networked as Fullrange use.
JA-3053 is similler to D-123 or better.
It Sounds almost equal to Olympus (JBL) .
Because Magnet is very strong(YAMAHA Patented) and Voice coil size is 66mm diameter.

If you want to get these Ear speaker,Please check Old electronic organ(30 years ago)
You can not see the inside of the Organ easily ,but you can check by Silhouette.
The Organ which has Ear Speaker always Squared Silhouette(not Circle) through Net
from front (Squared Hole) and rear multi squared hole.

Such way I found Old electronic organ and get One Ear speaker Last Sunday.
Also I have smaller one JA-3501 with JA-0505 one years ago

If you need I can post any kind of information I have.(Images and technical Information)
Because I kow the guy who developed "Baking condition of styrene foam
of these speaker" and "JA-0506 Tweeter Voice coil design".

Yamaha Ns-15

Dear Sirs,
Thank you for your kind private msg.

The pictures above

Mr. mrh,You are the saint saviour.
This model will be a NS-15
Plastic speaker is JA-3501 with good alminum die-cast frame
and Tweeter is JA-0505 alminium dome tweeter.
Freq is 40Hz - 18kHz
98dB/W

It should be set at least 50cm-1m away from the wall.
Because to avoid the mixing front and rear waves.

If you want clear sound, you would better remve the unit and
set Flat Buffle(Only add sidepanel like altec A-2,A-4 is enough)
and change use fullrange.

You will be able to experience real power of this speaker.
Tight Drums and real Horn sound and strings!!.
Tweeter should be simply attach with 6dB/Cap.

Difference of JA-3501 and JA-6001 is not a Size.
It has Black plastic thin sheet on the styloform cone.

And I post new images of NS-370 (Left is JBL-4343 Screen) and YAMAHA Electric Organ's speaker image.

Cheers,
mambo

Ja-3501

Ladies and gentlemen.

How do I take out JA-3501 of the box and listen?

If this photograph is seen, you will understand.

In this photograph, Tweeter is removed.

When listening, a plane, driving type of the ribbon tweeter is used.

It merely adds cutting it with 3kHz/6dB or 6kHz/6dB(depends on tweeter).
I drive JA-3501 as Fullrange. only add tweeter.

The image and the frequency response chart of JA-6001 : to the next enjoyment.

Cheers!
mambo
P.S. Grove speaker is Grundig 510,Lower is ARVIN..............

Dear mambo and mhardy,

Thanks for those wonderful pictures. This discussion is very interesting as I have been searching for information on these drivers for some time. I first noticed them in the early '70s when I saw them installed in various Yamaha Electones.

More recently I have been dismantling a number of Yamahas, and have been experimenting with 2 JA-5101As from two DK-40B Electones.

As you can see from the attached shot, I've re-mounted the drivers to the front of the plywood grill, after removing the grill cloth and modifying the oval hole slightly. I am planning to experiment with using my DEQX digital speaker correction/room correction processor (and ultimately wall-mounting these in the wall cavity between two rooms). The reason they are so close is that I am feeding a signal from my Lexicon DC-1 which is running its 'Panorama' program, which performs inter-aural crosstalk-cancellation (IACC).

The 'unprocessed' sound is rather dull spectrally but shows great promise, with obvious high (very high) sensitivity and rather impressive bass response for a basically unenclosed driver, even one of this 'diameter'.

This extra-close positioning of loudspeaker units + IACC is a fundamental component of the Ambiophonics concept, as opposed to traditional stereo principles (equilateral triangle, etc.). More here:

http://www.ambiophonics.org/

Careful perusal of this material will bring great rewards.

Thanks again, and I'll report back on results with the DEQX (see here):

Cheers,

Stephen A. Phillips

I bought a single auctioned JA-5101 last weekend ($1.50, $9 travel!) and wonder if anybody has any specifications for it?

Pictured hung temporarily on a wall, with an LP balanced on top for size indication...

I'm looking at another auction for a Sony ribbon tweeter that might go with it!

Both single items, so perhaps some nice mono, even open baffle, set-up is possible...

Thanks!
