Any opinions on Dahlquist DQ-12's???

In the process of scoring a pair needing new woofer surrounds for less than $100. Anyone heard these? How do they compare to the DQ-10's, which I have heard. Are they as power hungry? Seller has the manual and the original receipt too:thmbsp:

Has he got a pic of the back? I'm trying to make sure I'm not conflating the DQ12 and DQ20. IMHO, I like both of them, but I want to make sure which one I'm remembering...

Smaller sibling to DQ-20. Only heard them once, long ago, when I was shopping for the DQ-20's I ended up buying. Great imaging, like other Dahlquists. Not nearly as power hungry as DQ-10's. They need room to breathe all around. For less than a franklin, they're a steal.
 
Very nice speakers, but there were two versions with different high ends, I believe. My wife did not like the looks at all.

Wasn't the DQ12 a 2-way, and the DQ20 a 3-way? IIRC, the DQ20 was ALMOST just like an Alon 2 (which, as I'm checking, makes sense, SAME DESIGNER- Carl Marchisotto of late Dahlquist design, Alon, Nola and Acarian Systems).

Both are nice... the DQ20 definitely does win in midrange clarity (naturally)... but the DQ12 is quite well balanced. Kind of in the Vandersteen 1 motif, in a lot of ways (and that's pretty high praise, IMHO)...

I'm pretty sure those are 12's, 3- way with smaller woofer than the 3-way 20's (which have the same Advent woof as 10's) (like I said already, it's been a long time). You may be thinking of 8's, which are definitely 2-ways (I have a pair in a closet).

Auction closed without a sale, so I contacted the seller on the side. Came to an agreement and paid him $80 via Paypal. Woofers need refoaming, and I've been told that these woofers may need a large roll surround because of the long throw of the woofer. Hopefully they won't be too hard to find....:thmbsp:

12's are 3-way, or my eyes are seeing triple cause I have them.

The 20i's wider frequency response probably has to do with the larger woofer (& cab), plus its smaller tweeter; it's the same mid driver in both 20i and 12.

Nope they are not the same. One has a visible former from the outside, the other's former is covered by the spider.

It is possible these are not original but they seem to be.

Just found the SN on my 10's: about 17000; before the better crossovers.

So now I have an excuse to buy caps... :thmbsp:

My comment forgot to include that mine are 20i--not 20. And my DQ-10 is 17000's SN so it's early but not super-early.

It may also be true that a very small first run of the 10's has the exact same Advent woof, but after that they were modified (improved?). Again, that's heresy so it's inadmissable... or heresay.

I just got a pair of DQ-12s a few weeks ago, and although I'm still experimenting to find what best to drive them with, I already love 'em! My wife isn't thrilled with "those big black things", though, but admits they sound good. Funny that the word "big" seems to be applied more to the DQs than it was the much bigger Infinity RS IIs when I brought those home. :scratch2: Maybe the uglier something is, the sooner it gets big?

It has been over a year since I heard the DQ-10s and I don't own them, so I can't give a fair comparison, but the 12s do have that nice open and detailed soundstage that Dahlquists are famous for (presumably due to those mid and high drivers being nestled in those 1/8-wavelength mini-baffles).

The 12s are definitely 3-way (woofer, mid, tweeter).

Mine came ready-wired for bi-amping (you'd need jumpers to run them off of one amp) and this appears to be factory original. I found this surprising/confusing, as I have read about other owners having to re-wire theirs for bi-amping. :headscrat Please let us know what the connections are like on yours, when you get it. Not sure if I have one that was upgraded long ago, a special order, or what.
 
My DQ-12 set have 4 binding posts each, and it's original AFAIK.
That's what the owner's manual says.

DQ-20 could be upgraded that way, DQ-20i came already like that, but there were other more extensive changes. 12 vs. 18dB crossover...

:music: mine get the royal treatment--vintage SS Pioneer SX-1050, 120 clean toroidal wpc.

(There are a few loose orphan tubes in a box in my garage but no amps. Guess I need to find homes for them. )

My wife isn't thrilled with "those big black things", though, but admits they sound good. Funny that the word "big" seems to be applied more to the DQs than it was the much bigger Infinity RS IIs when I brought those home. :scratch2: Maybe the uglier something is, the sooner it gets big?

Really important. When I 'auditioned' DQ-10's on a 100w Carver, I thought the bass was weaker than my 20i's on my 165w Concept, but now I know the DQ-10 gets lower/deeper.

Less efficient, but there are always tradeoffs... 20i might have an ultimately louder bass since it's rated for 250 vs. 200 wpc. 250 w at 88 sensitivity is much louder than 200 w at 82-85.

Hmmm... if only it were so easy, that a Caveman can do it-- :lmao: design a loudspeaker that does that.

So many things have to be going right!...so many variables & tradeoffs to juggle...not compromising on precision and quality...

Mine have the multiple binding posts. I had to ask the seller for the bars--lucky I thought of that, since the fuses were blown I was buying without hearing first.
