value for a Sony PS-X555ES turntable?

h'lo all, first time here...

I was reading through some old posts and came across this comment from what seems like a pretty knowledgable guy ""Still pine for a Sony PS-X555ES. I'm just hesitant to lay out the kind of money they go for "".
O.K., I'm hooked(on knowing what they're worth) I've got a PS-X555ES with a Shure V15 Type IV that's roughly circa '88. It's got about 200+ hours on it. Works perfectly, but faded plastic cover. I checked eBay, but none show up in past sales. Any thoughts on what I ought to look for, *if* I decide to part with it?

They usually go between 200-350 euro here in Europe, depending on the state they are in. It is a pretty good table, but according to Axel from TVK, not so easy to service and find parts for anymore, compared to the ps-x800.
 
A little point of etiquette here on AK.... First time users asking for the value of their equipment so they can re-sell it on eBay is not a good way to start off your membership....

point well taken....however, I'm wondering where, in my post, you read that I intended to re-sell it on eBay? I mentioned that I had "checked eBay" to attempt to find a value, based on previous sales.

Hey Willie!

I'm sure that I'm not the only member who took your post as the usual "I'm only here to check out how much my **** is worth, and you will never see me again after I sell it on eBay" posts that show up here all to often.

You also make no mention of keeping the Sony or using it in your post, so what the hell are we supposed to think? :scratch2:

See you on eBay, pal.... You are off to a hell of a start. Now I have to go and edit my post from Monday, saying that out of 25,000 AudioKarma members, I have only met one that I didn't like... :thumbsdn:
 
Ralph, can you blame me for getting a little tense? We all know that day after day, a handful of newbies pop on here just to do what he did, ask about the value of a piece of gear, and they are never heard from again, unless of course you run into them later that day on eb*y, selling the same piece of equipment they were just asking about here on AK!

This is not the Orion Blue Book! I politely pointed out to this person that this kind of inquiry on AK from someone who has just joined, was in poor taste. I didn't drag himthrough the mud, or imply that he was an inbred cretin who smelled like feet... I was polite, and trying to be helpful.

Look where that got me... A snotty reply! I probably should have been the mature one, and let it go, but it was typed so fast I couldn't stop myself from posting it! If he gets angry and decides not to be a contributor because of my semi sharp tounge, oh well. Judging by the tone and attitude of his first two posts it doesn't look like anyone is going to mourn the loss of this newbie... Plenty of that kinda stuff to go around, know what I mean?

Gentlemen, let's be nice to the new member, aight? New members haven't the experience of learning the subtle etiquette of the forum and certainly haven't the experience of enduring the agony of "day after day, a handful of newbies pop on here just to do what he did" as you apparently have. The original post only was seeking pricing information "if" a sale were to occur and the reply doesn't catch me as the least bit snotty. Rather, it seemed well restrained compared to what elicited it.

It's not easy posting on a new forum the first time. Jumping on his case right away and going on a rant is the last thing that will make a new member care to stick around. Perhaps you're not reacting to the problem, but a cause of it? Birddog, while there may be 25000 registered, haven't you noticed the other statistic on the bottom that reads "Active Members: 8,683"? Maybe if we all are a bit friendlier to first time posters, they'll stick around and increase that active member count.

Now, Mr Myers, I hope that you'll choose to stick around and post a bit. People in general are friendly here and if you continue to keep the turntable, I'm sure you'll find help to any questions you might have. It really is a nice table, despite the disparagement the Sony brand sometimes endures elsewhere, and I can vouch for how well the Biotracer technology works. Out of curiosity, would this gent be you? Is there an album with your music that some of us might've heard or have?

Thanks to this post, I think I just found a home for mine. It's likely to go to an AKer in the midwest- but it's going to him no charge, unless he gets the dust cover.

It needs very minor attention, and is nearly perfect, but with 2 other TTs here already, I'm gonna pass on keeping it, as I don't want to deal with future issues with the servo arm.

Granted, the servo arm is an excellent design, and indeed these are nice tables, and seem they would be ideal for places where you need very good isolation. But for some reason, I just couldn't sell it- 2 local close calls but no-shows, 3 dirt-cheap deals for AKers, and two "free" offers- the second one taking it.

My advice is if it works and is a nice TT, and you dig vinyl, keep it. You risk a good chance at getting squat for it, even though it's a good table.

And if you do sell it for anything even remotely respectable, if that servo arm doesn't work, then you risk the wrath of an angry buyer.

My first response was a thoughtful attempt to help this individual become a valued contributing member. In no way was my first response off the mark, or considered rude in any way.

I don't care if this guy was the first newbie to pull this stunt, or the 15,000th. I made a kind attempt to help him on his way, and he goes and makes his second mistake, and that was being a snotty newbie.

JP, we both have been here for some time, and I think you must have read enough of my 2,500 + posts to know that I would go out of my way to help any one here, newbie or not. Hell, I still think of myself as a newbie, after two years and 2,800 posts!

However, for you to call me a cause of the problem, is far more out of line than my decision not to turn the other cheek when this person popped up with a 'tude while looking for a price for his turntable, and then being rude to me. I was far more polite to this stranger, as well as tolerant, than you have chosen to be with me.

I'm pretty damn sure that I fall into that "People in general are friendly here..." category, and I am the only one between the two of us that can say they have never been banned from an audio forum before because of "Posting Issues", for lack of a more polite descriptor....

Guess I have to go back and edit Monday's post again....

I happen to agree with JP on this one.

Here is a note I just posted to another thread just like this one:

Some nice AK member could have then said something like this:

"Welcome to Audio Karma!

That wouldn't have been so tough, would it? I wonder how many potential "good" AK members have been lost this way?

If the above would have been done instead of what actually took place, no arguments would have come out of it, and a "newbie" would feel more welcome here. We don't know what the OP is going to with the equipment he wants valuated, so why "assume" we do???
