Took the ADS L300 from the stands, replaced them with these Presideans and I was pleasantly surprised. Of course not in the same league as the ADS but what the heck, they were cheap.
FWIW, I had the same experience last night. Couldn't pass, given the price, a whopping $7.50 each.
IMO they don't sound half bad even though they are not yet broken in. My best description of them is that they "sound much bigger than they should" when provided some decent power. Not stunning but not enough major flaws to get in the way of having some fun with them.
I drove them with my "new" $50, GW, 65W, HK PA2100 power amp. I had no preamp handy so I ran the amp directly via the headphone jack of my trusty old RS CD3400 portable.
To my ear, they lack mids, and the highs are not as delicate and detailed as I would like. They do not excel in coherence and, as reported above, they congest (close up and smear) when pushed hard.
They are definitely not as good in the mids and highs as my ADS 200cs but they do have more bass and sound much bigger. They are also not as refined as the Minimus 7s in the mids and highs but also have substantially more bass and also sound much much bigger. Didn't get to compare them to the Insignias yet but they are about 50% smaller in size/volume and not built as well. They better the Insignias in the knuckle rap test though.
IMO they would make a great mate for an Accurian amp (a brand new $30 stereo) run by a single source such as an IPOD, portable CD or even a computer/laptop. Don't expect $200 to $300 speaker sound. Instead, they provide very acceptable sound for what they are.
