MCD-301 sonic quality?

How does it compare to the MVP871?
Let's ask a simpler question first: how many folk actually have or have heard one?

Looking back to all the posts about the MCD201, there were a lot of people complaining about various things. But - based on my reading/memory - everyone said it sounded terrific. I don't think sound quality ever came up as a disappointment and it's too bad that the other issues squelched and overpowered discussion of how good it actually sounds.

My recollection is the same, but I understand that the 301 is an "all-new" unit, at a higher level than the 201, with increased sound quality. I've no idea what the changes are, but the 301's sound probably can't be guessed at based on the 201.
I have. The system I heard had Manley tube amps, and pre-amp with B&W N805 speakers and the MCD301. Not really familiar with the sound of the Manley stuff. However the sound was fabulous. To get sound like that, the transport can not be a limiting factor. What I heard was an extremely natural sounding and clean, clear system. But without being able to remove it from the system and place another player that I am familiar with into it's place and then switch back, I can't say exactly how good the MCD301 is. However, again, it was certainly not the limiting factor. I like the thin metal tray that is uses.

Speaking for myself, the sound quality has always been terrific. The problem is/was all the other issues.

That's admirably diplomatic but what we all need to know is if 301 sounds better than 201 not to mention if it has all the technical issues that plagued 201 solved. I think you and other guys at McIntosh of all people had the chance to compare both units seriously.:scratch2:

It is totally unrealistic to expect any loyal employee to give any other answer
to a subjective question like that in a public forum such as this one.

but there are just 2 points he can stress in order to sell 301 to me and many other potential customers here - 1) it indeed sounds better than 201, and 2) it doesn't have 201's issues. Simple as that. Even one of these points would do it for me as I've been reluctant to buy 201 because of all the well documented issues. 301's arrival is great news to me but I really need to know these 2 answers.

I would suggest you go listen to one - that will answer one of the questions. I think it needs to sound good to you, regardless of what others think.
With respect to reliability, I don't think any reputable manufacturer (and I put McIntosh high on this list) would knowingly put out a product with known problems and there aren't enough of these out there to have any sort of track record in actual operation. I think this answers the other question.
I will be back in town Sunday and "For the love of you guys" I will A-B it against the 201.

I would expect him to say it sounds better than the 201 if it does....wouldn't you? Or perhaps if that is too subjective, he might say it measures better, but listening is subjective.

Every manufacturer says their product sounds best and blows away the competition. So I will not go there.
We are not bringing out new models that do not perform at or above the level of the previous model. I do agree with the advise given that you should go listen the MCD301 with your own CDs and make your own personal evaluation.

I guess that means I do not need a MCD301 since my MCD205 also sounds clean, clear and musical.
