Looks like it was a decent unit in 1972. Any thoughts? I haven't hooked it up yet.

Likewise. I grew up with a Sony 6050 - predecessor to the 6055. Now have 6045 and 2 6065's - one has weak right channel I need to get to some day :scratch2:

Sony made excellent gear during this period. They wanted to compete with Marantz et al.

Yeah, Sony did make some pretty good receivers & integrated amps back in the early 70's. When you compare them to what Sony makes now when you go to Best Buy, it kinda makes you feel sad.

I hooked it up quickly and it definitely needs to be cleaned. All the pots are scratchy and the right channel cuts in and out...Might need caps too. The body is solid and heavy!

The dual-knob feature is ... interesting. Not sure I like it. Seems like a gimmicky way to provide left-right balance. But, it's unique!

Questions:

1) The silver face doesn't have any pitting, but has sort of a yellow-ish haze over it. What's the best way to get it shiny again without damaging the text or surface?

2) Can the screw terminals in the back be converted to spring terminals or something more modern?

3) Are there specs/dimensions for the wood case? How hard would it be to build one?

Only thing I can say for sure - careful cleaning face plate as that lettering can come right off.

2nd from the totl 6065 of its day. I have the 6065 and 6045 and yours sits between them. Bet you'll really like it. These are 2 pair of my favorite level 2 and 3 receivers.

Since we have a few Sony afficionados here, which is the better Sony- the 6045 and 6065 or the 7045 and 7065? I don't see much difference physically. Just wondering!

Hey! I brought a 6050 on ebay for $20.00. Picked it up myself to save shipping.Amp works good but fm is bad. What is the difference from this and the others? I think mine was in a garage with a motorcycle and seems to have grease on the inside. I was going to try washing it in gas and washing it off in soap to try and fix the fm section.Radical yes but otherwise what could I do.Any ideas? The gas should not hurt the ckts as far as I know.

I have a 6055 and it's a fine unit. No scratches in the audio, I now have all the lights working and the tuner is excellent. The audio is a tad on the "heavy" side and perhaps it could use a recap. Right now I'm using it as the tuner for my Kenwood KA-6100 integrated amp, but could use it on its own. It's in my basement system now.

i spent a little time listening to the Sony in my basement tonight. Not the best environment, but good enough to make some observations.

for 45w it is pretty powerful, definitely enough to make my 2-ways dance around. i can't help but feel the midrange sounds "sharp" and the tone controls don't offer any trim for midrange. highs are very clean and bass is clean and flat. those 2-ways sound much boomier with the 100w Kenwood KRA5070 that they are accustomed to.

i have to admit, i like the sound of the Pioneer equipment better (formerly SA-9100 and now SX-750). And the dual-trim knobs are confusing to me. i just want a simple balance control!

i'll try to clean it up with some DeOxIt and make another evaluation in a few days....

Here are some pics before disassembly and cleaning:

You can see the yellow tarnish on the surface. Maybe a MagicEraser will clean that?

I'd like to upgrade these to banana plugs or spring terminals

I've still got this one in the basement... I haven't done anything with it yet, though it's a keeper.

One thing I like about it, the tuner is FM only! Funny.

Thanks for the pic of your 6065. I've got one that doesn't have the "balance wheel" and I had no idea what it looked like. Now I do! :thmbsp:

Here's mine...

Nice! I picked up another with better balance wheel. One in pic above is broken. There's a plastic piece that extend down with round silver metal knob. That piece broke off the one above - it's cracked as well.

I have had good luck with Flitz polish. It cleans the face without affecting the lettering. It does a pretty good job on knobs too. I found it at the hardware store. That is a nice looking unit - something to be proud of when it is clean.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but can you tell me how you get those pics embedded in your posts? I know how to do the attached thumbnails, but I'd like to put a larger pic in the message.
