My Ikea stereo rack and DIY RCM

Hello,

I though I'd share with you the "stereo rack" I bought at Ikea. It's supposed to be a bookshelf but it fit my needs perfectly as I needed it to be pretty wide to accommodate my Kenwood KR-8010 that's about 21 inches wide.

After having the rack for a couple months the idea for the drawer RCM came to me as a neat solution to keep it out of the way.

The RCM is based on the famous "ARK", using an Ice Cream maker for torque, but I decided to go with the VPI vacuum tube from elusivedisc.com ($70 OUCH!, http://www.elusivedisc.com/prodinfo.asp?number=HW-3016) for a more professional look.

I think that looks very good: it fits your space nicely, the gear all fits on it, and the cleaner-in-a-drawer is an especially nice touch! Puts the RCM right where it is most convenient (wash-n-play, without wasting a step!) but keeps it nicely hidden when not in use. Also that is one of the nicest-looking DIY RCMs I've ever seen. Well done! :thmbsp:

The only hesitation I would have is that the strength of Ikea gear varies widely: some of it (like the Expedit shelves commonly used by AKers for LPs) can hold a lot of weight, but some other shelf models won't hold up the weight of vintage audio gear very well. I assume you've picked one of the stronger ones, as it would be a tragic shame if an upper shelf gave way and everything 'dominoed' down, like a stack of bricks knocked over...:no: :tears: If the shelves don't bend or sag, and you don't see any splitting underneath or above where the little connectors go into the shelves, it should be okay.
 
Very nice. I see you have at least one roller under the platter. Is that to keep it stable? I have the same issue, but I placed small pieces of hardwood at 4 equal lengths around the platter to keep it from leaning.

I like the VPI tube and thought about getting one but heard they crack after a while. That's sad that something so expensive won't hold up.

Very nice job, but I couldn't have mine in the same rack as I like to clean a few records while listening to some.
 
Very cool. One benefit to Ikea stuff is that its infinitly malleable and you can customize it for all kinds of uses.

The weight of the whole system was a concern also for me, but this one is rated at 66lbs per shelf so hopefully it will hold.
Scootchu, yes, I added 4 rollers to keep it stable when I apply pressure with the brush. They were designed for patio doors I believe. Found them on ebay, about $4 for a pair.
 
That is a nice looking setup, including the Tektronix oscilloscope. Looking at the tape deck on the top of the rack make me think that you have never experienced an earthquake where you live in Florida. I could not do that here. Nice work on the record cleaning machine. :thmbsp:
 
That's great. It's very much like one I got at Target about a year and a half ago. Problem is I've outgrown it. I'm now considering building something like the Flexi Table, only with laminated glass shelves.

The Expedit bookshelf was perfect as an album shelf and stereo rack for my daughter's room, and today I found a few stackable $1.99 CD racks that fit the Expedit cubbies (I can actually fit them two deep, so I'll have to get 4 more). So, her space now holds about 450 LP's and 80 CD's very cleanly.

There will be a few things that you'll have to work out while you go (like the rollers scootchu mentioned) but it's a fairly easy project. The advantage of using a drawer like I did is that I avoided most of the wood work, which would have been kind of difficult in my apartment.

And no, I haven't heard of any earthquakes in Miami... plenty of hurricanes though. Good thing these give plenty of warning so I can get my R2R down ;)
