Boston Acoustics A-150 Woofer Replacement

So, I purchased a pair of Boston Acoustics A-150's off of Craigslist pretty recently, and due to oversight on my part, did not bother to look at both speakers with their front grills off. One of the speakers has the original woofer with the square magnet. The foam in obviously shot, but that's not a big deal. The other speaker has a newer, non-Boston woofer installed. The back of the woofer has the label "Goldsound A25GU30-51F" printed on the back of it. Pics of the woofer are below.

What I'm wondering is if this woofer was at any time a Boston-approved replacement or would function similarly to the stock woofer. From what google could tell me, Goldsound is a pretty well-respected name, so I'm sure the woofer isn't a total piece of crap. However, I purchased the speakers in hopes of getting the "Boston" sound and I'd feel kinda short-changed if I wasn't. My intuition is telling me I should search out a replacement, so in that case, is there any place to look other than e-bay? I already contacted Boston and they stopped stocking the original woofer long ago. Any input is greatly appreciated.

I was in the same boat a few weeks back, except I needed both woofers. Fortunately, I had a set of A100s I pulled them from. the RS woofers in there were actually quite nasty sounding when A/B'd with the A100s. The RS's were so bad I could hardly believe it.

I'd try to source a set online.

The Dayton DC250-8 10" Classic Woofer Part no.295-315 is a drop-in replacement for Boston 10" wooofers.
Some say they sound even better than the Boston woofers. Bloody cheap price too!

That is very good info as my understanding is that Boston no longer sells replacements for any of their vintage gear.

That GoldSound woofer is a re-badged Pioneer product. I've used the original-OEM built ones of those before.

Unfortunately, they're NOT much like the original Boston woofers.

The recommendation for the Dayton Classic 10" is a quite decent substitute- it's not exactly like the original, but it's about the closest thing to an acoustic match that I've found for them.

BTW: If Boston is no longer carrying these, I believe I can get proper reconing kits for the originals. If you can find a blown driver (Ebay?), it can be rebuilt. Will run probably around $50-55 or so. Not cheap (not particularly expensive either, OTOH), but it WILL give you the "right stuff"...

BTW^2: Boston made this woofer with several magnet styles- square magnet, round magnet, round magnet with vent hole in middle- fortunately, ANY of them will work. They're all "acoustically identical", IME.

BTW^3: Believe it or not, the 10" woofer from an Advent Legacy or Advent Maestro will also work. Look at a picture of the Advent woofer from those models, compared to the Boston- it's the EXACT SAME cone (made by Jensen for both)- right down to the three concentric circumferential ribs stamped into the paper surface . I've substituted these, with pretty darn good results... the voice coils are subtly different (if you take them apart, you can see small differences), but they're close enough, IME, to work in place of each other...

I've got an extra 10 inch boston woofer sitting around. There from A100's but I think the A150's and A200's along with the A100's use the same woofer(I'll check this on my end, does anyone have more info on the interchaniblity of the woofer?) If your interested I'll check the woofer against the ones in my A200's. Price wise I'm thinking $20 + shipping, it has been refoamed and works great. Let me know what you think and hope this isn't toooo late.

replacement woofer

Hey everyone I've been a lurker for a while now, this is my first post. I Have a pair of A 70s that i love , I just ran across a pair of a-150s the cabs are in great shape but with the woofers missing. I think Im still gonna pick them up for $40 just becouse they're in such amazing shape. If anyone who has Replaced these woofers already has a recommendation that would be great. I would like to hold out for original woofers or pick up a super beat up pair for cheap to use as woofer donors..... Thanks in advance

That A25GU30-51F is an original pioneer from there DIY line. Their DIY speakers were wonderful drivers and have used them many times. Pioneer used to have a full line of DIY drivers that were sold through distributors.
