The end of vinyl's days...

Have you noticed toward the end of the days of vinyl being the mainstream music source that they sure seemed to learn what bass was all about? I have LPs of all kinds from all time periods and the later the better. I was floored today by a .50 cent LP I found. Madonna's Like a Virgin. Record was very clean and HOLY SHEET did it sound well mastered. I never was a big Madonna fan either way but, daahhyymmnnnn this pressing absolutely rocks. Ya know you prolly heard that song Like a Virgin hundreds of times on the radio but I heard it for the first time today. It tracked GREAT too! I couldn't believe it. If you find that LP sitting in the used rack I HIGHLY recommend that you snatch it up. You won't be dissapointed. WHEW

Funny... I just picked it up at a garage sale this week. Appeared to be in very excellent shape.

I have to agree that even though the vinyl seems thinner the sound out of some the last LP's is fantastic. I have many 80's LP's that sound just great. Tonight I just played Yello - Stella... Oh Ya..
and Suzanne Vega, but sounded excellent.

Sorry you let the secret out. I've been trying to snatch as much as I can.

The wife was pretty surprised the other night when I put on Prince "Purple Rain".. sounded very good, even if I don't especailly care for the music. Although I think it was the first time she came down to the listening room and sat and listened for an entire LP.

I agree, some of the 80's stuff sounds absolutely wonderful. Madonna always seems to be a step above most pop rock productions, and if you like Purple Rain, try Prince-1999.
I think a bit of the reason these albums seem so much better than we would expect is because we have really only heard them on the radio or through a cassette deck in our cars.
Every once in a while I will find something like a Bob Seger or other rock album and the same thing happens, it is like a totally new experience.
My all time favorite album is Men Without Hats-Pop Goes the World, they seem to have taken a lot of care in the production, it is a bit digitalized, but very clean and a lot of fun.

I've been giving this some more thought, VH thinks it may be because we were listing on in the car or radio.

I have another thought. Actually two different theories. One is that earlier matterial was mastered to sound good over radio. Motown was a forrunner of this. By the mid 80's most LP use was being used in clubs by DJ's on big house systems. The market may have demanded better dynamics.

Here's my other line of thought and probably closer to the truth. CD's and expanded dynamic range cassettes were becoming the main stay. Maybe it's just the original recording had these formats in mind and resulted in a better recorded vinyl LP.

VH: I'd love to find that Men with out hat's, but 80 vinly is almost as rare as good classic blues.

Listened to two more great ones last night, YAZ "you and me both" and Information Society. I wasn't expecting much out the Society, but it blew me away. I didn't recall the group, but recognized many of the tunes from my clubing days. A couple samples of Star Trek didn't hurt, " I know what you know, I feel what you feel"

Well thats nice to hear cause I'm waiting for 2 80's LP's to arrive. I won an auction for U2's "War" and "The Joshua Tree".I'll be sure to give my impressions when they arrive.

You will dig the hell outta those U2 Lp's. There were a couple of different issues of those but I think the are pretty close. As far as other 1980's recordings I cant stand 90 % of the music enough to listen to it. Of course there was some good stuff like most of Ozzy's releases on Jet. But Men Without Hats??? I used to beat up the kids at school who listened to that stufff While you guys were listening to that stuff I was seeing Metalic open up for Flostsom and Jetson in Tiny bars in arizona. Now lets start talking about some BOC or Robin Trower and then we can talk music...Not the sythesized BlaH of the huge hair 80's Of course these are just my opinions and your milage may vary.

I got those U2's, also won in on Ebay in a lot with Boy, October, Live at Red Rocks and Rattle and Hum. Mine are all VG to Mint, you shouldn't be disappointed.

Like a virgin, You and me both, Joshua Tree - great music and super sounding LP's. Oops! Better watch out for Grumpy!

Upstairs at Eric's(Yaz) another good one. Madonna's "Music" on CD a bit bright but also very dynamic. I've seen the "Immaculate Collection" on vinyl somwhere and will probably get it next time round.
