Hi all, just got back from the SA with a loaded trunk. Walk in and up on the shelve was this Akai GX-635D and on the floor was this box of tapes. The only problem is that it lights up when I push the power switch but when I load the tape and push play, nothing happens. Can anyone recommend a fix or where to start? Cheers. p.s. the deck and tapes were $80.00 but the guy said to wait 15 minutes because they were going to have a drawing and first prize was a 50% off coupon and second prize was a 25% off coupon. I looked around and there was only me and one other customer in the store......I won the 50% coupon. So the whole shooting match cost $42.50.....

If you push play and can hear the motor but no movement, its hopefully just a belt and not the idlers. Akai's were also notorious for cams that literally disintegrate over time. Still no worries.. they can be replaced.
 
When I opened up the back I found a bank of five fuses.....one is blown....I am on my way to RS now. Cheers.

Congratulations, that is an awesome looking deck! Glad it only needed a fuse!!

Just plug it into the 'Tape In/Out' jacks and your good to go.

Yep, that Akai one is worth that alone.
That's a real nice deck. I've got one and loved it, but when some transistors in one of the channels went south, it lost it's place to qa Revox A77. If one channel has a low and crackly recording, you may have the same issue, but I'd guess that's probably not the case. Someone just didn't want Grandpa's old deck and donated it.

BTW, those Maxell tapes are sweet, but most of those 7" are probably useless. You probably should donate them back :D

Well, not all is as well as it seemed. One channel is out! Just talked to a guy that works on the Akai exclusivly and he is talking in the $200.00 range to fix it.....I think I'll give it a go first. Cheers.
 
Even with the spend on a service you are a very lucky man. Zero chance of anything like that turning up anywhere within 200 miles of here! Enjoy it. Reel to reel is a great thing to get hooked on!
 
Good idea Pat. Unfortunatly I am going out of town soon and I won't be able to get to it for a couple weeks. I am ashamed to admit it, but I bought it to turn so I can buy a tone arm and motor for my DIY TT, but now that I have it, it is not going anywhere. It is a work of art in it's self. Cheers.

Talk to me at the next SMAC and maybe we can get it going You can always sell the reels and tapes and get a nice return.
 
Sweet find. Why the hell didn't I grab up those Akai rtr when our radio station was unloading them FOR 50 BUCKS@???!!?!?!?

Dammit.

You could sell some of those reels for a good profit and use the dough to fix that beautiful deck. Of course keeping all the tape would be a better option.
But you have the option!

A $15 can of deoxit is well worth the investment. That deck is some serious looking machinery! I've never seen an Akai like that. And Akai makes excellent R2R's from my experience.
