I have 70's vintage Pioneer CS-G403 speakers. They're not exactly the glamorous speakers from back when and I think they have simple crossovers. Is there any benefit to replacing the caps with newer polypropylenes? Wow, if I could improve them with a little soldering. Thanks ahead of time as always.

To open up the high frequency range of CS-G403s, replace the cone tweeters with these:

You may have to make a small adapter plate out of masonite or whatever (the Audax tweeters are a little smaller in diameter than the originals), but I've DONE this to THIS EXACT MODEL speaker (our anime convention owns four pairs of 'em), and it definitely WORKS.
And for $5 each? Hard to go wrong, for the money!
That, and plugging up the port (with a NERF ball, rolled up sock or whatever), combined with some additional cabinet stuffing (loosely fill up the cabinet with fiberglass or polyfill), and things get significantly better on these. If you're really ambitious, add a front-to-rear wooden brace inside the cabinet, between the woofer and midrange (a 2x2 board works great for this). They actually sound pretty good afterwards!
I'd be inclined to do this, before recapping them. But, if you like, just replace the electrolytic caps with equivalent value poly caps... the Dayton caps from Parts Express will be just fine...

I found a pair of these speakers at a swap meet for $30. Anyways when I took them apart I noticed something interesting.
The stock caps were 3.9uF for the 4.25" speaker and 2.2uF for the 2.5in tweeter. Which equates to something like 5000Hz high-pass filter for the mid-range speaker and 9000Hz for the tweeter. So you are sending highs to the mids and super highs to the tweeter. Obliviously not a good thing which might explain why some people complained about the punchy bass since that's all that's being done correctly.
I changed the 3.9uf cap to 33uf and the 2.2uF cap to 3.3uF, which equals 600Hz high-pass for the mids and 6000Hz high-pass for the highs. The speakers sound much better now.
One last thing, the stock wires to the mid and tweeter were swapped on the crossover board so the cap was put on the negative line. I decided to resolder the wires so that the cap would be placed on the positive wire.

Adding to this thread for anybody searching.
I have a pair of these just to listen to rap music on, and then my mid-range went out, So I researched youtube and found a guy who went through a complete rework of the cross over, link posted

As far as replacements, I have found the Hivi TN25 fabric Dome Tweeter to be really nice and the mounting holes lined right up with the old tweeters. Currently only $13.90 each Parts Express part# 297-408
Midrange, GRS 5SBM-8, its a 5" sealed midrange currently only $5.98 each. Parts Express part# 292-432
16" Woofer, I haven't had to replace these yet, but age has me looking for a newer replacement driver, so far I have only found these few:

Joanne’s fabric is perfect if you need to replace your mesh if you have two speakers and want some extra fabric i would recommend 1 1/2 yards
