Toshiba SC-335 and SY-335

Hi again;

Came across these in the local ads. The guy says the SC-335 does not power on. IMO That might be the case of a simple blown fuse because the unit does not have a protection relay, just fuses...So I read anyway. He says the SY-335, however, is working. He is asking for $50 (Canadian) for both. Any ideas? Thanks a lot

Great set. I bet the amp powers on, but the lights are out..... Fuses could also be blown...

Bought the units. $25 for both of them. And the SC-335 Power Amp is working! Including the VU Meter lights. One issue, the right channel is shot. Neither the VU Meter nor anything else is working. I am going to open her up now. By the way, it sounds REALLY nice. It's made in Taiwan and certainly is no Pioneer SA-9500 II but for $25 (Candian) you can't go wrong.

Update:

Both channels are now operational. It was a lousy blown fuse. One of the 3 fuses the unit has inside was blown. I took one out of my Realistic TM-1000 and put it in the Toshiba SC-335. Works like a charm. I must say, I am VERY impressed with the sound this unit puts out. Mids and Higs are really crisp (not ear scratching) and the Bass is extremely accurate and tight. Gives my HPM-100's a good run for $25 and they look very sweet and cool. I'm giving this a BIG thumbs up

This TOSHIBA set keeps growing on me. I guarantee it sounds 10 times better and warmer than the Pioneer SX-950 I have. I am absolutely LOVING it...

They are a great set up....

I remember when those hit the streets. Back then, there were certain models that got _lots_ of buzz from the manufacturer's reps. At first, I thought they were just trying to sell more gear when they would come in the store and tell us about this cool this-or-that amp. Turns out they were quite genuine in their praise about them. This little Toshiba setup was one of those 'insider buzz' types of products.

The problem with most of these buzz products was that they tended to stay in the product line up a short period of time. In fact, what happened was that many of the dealers and reps would buy up the stock. The vendor, in his infinite wisdom, realized that they had priced it too low in the product lineup and would stop importing it for a higher-priced and less featured model. This, too, happened with the Toshiba pre/power amp setup you have. The followup pre/power combo was dreck and priced higher. End of the run.....

I remember buying one of the preamps only to tear into it and built a Leach preamp with the chassis as a senior engineering project. Funny how that works......

I was around as well when these units hit the streets. With the only exception of being 6 years old. So I don't really remember, or know for that matter, what the vendor thought or the manufacturer said or who did what. What I understand from your comments is that these little things were well worthy but priced too low and the manufacturer thought they were going for too cheap and decided to make a less quality unit with less features and sold it for a higher price. At all possibilities, I believe I had a good buy.

The SC-335 is a great little unit to tweak. Upgrading caps and resistors in signal path geatly improves this little unit, as does power supply upgrades. Tweaked it will beat a Pioneer SA-9100 do not know about version II. Using dual power supplies I get about 60 - 65 watts of clean power versus 45 watts stock, size of heatsink becomes an issue. The SY-335 preamplifier does not do the amplifier justice, but I have not tweaked one yet just used a better preamp. Can this unit be bridged?

The Pioneer SA-9100 has a great sounding amplifier section and just like the Toshiba above the preamp section does not do the amplifier section justice. However both units can be used as an amplifier only.

A friend of the girlfriend gave me a Pioneer SA-9100 because it was broken, wire on fuse holder broken, one of my tougher repair jobs. So before returning it I upgraded the left channel of the amplifier, unit comes as left and right modules. Waited 50 hours plus and it was obvious which channel was upgraded, however did not achieve the improvement that I had hoped for. So I then removed the pre-amplifier section and upgraded it's signal path and after just a couple of hours of use the right channel was removed and upgraded. Upgrading the pre-amplifier section resulted in a larger improvement than the amplifier section but upgrading both sections really took this unit to the next level. Replaced main caps in power supply and added 10,000uF per side.

Now the girlgriend does not want to return the Pioneer, heck I am presently looking for another one to upgrade. The upgraded SA-9100 sounds great very clean and tight with excellant sounding bass, both the Pioneer & Toshiba units are great units to tweak.

I have not compared the two units side by side but I would use either tweaked units in any system that only needs about 50 watts per channel.

I picked up an SC-335 on eBay a couple of months ago for my home office system. It had one channel out on arrival from Nova Scotia, turned out that the functioning channel had foil wrapped around its protection fuse and the bad channel's fuse was blown -- two fuses later (had the right ones "in stock" because they're the same value as in my Adcom GFA-535) and I was in business.

I have no tweaking plans -- the thing has more than enough juice as-is, runs fairly warm, and afaik the only capacitors directly in the signal path (10uF 35v 'lytics) are right at the inputs to the very first stages -- everything else appears to be DC coupled right out to the speaker terminals. I haven't AB-ed it with the Adcom on the same speakers, but offhand I'd say they're pretty much in the same league: clear-as-a-bell highs and deep, rich lows with no harshness whatsoever and nothing exaggerated -- and, unlike the Adcom, the SC-335 has a headphone jack, which widens my preamp options immensely. Oh, and it cost me only $12.49 USD plus postage (and those two 4 amp fast-blow 3AG fuses).
