Hi All, I read an ad in CL late last night for a estate sale. They mentioned VERY Large VERY Old speakers in beautiful cabinets. This morning I got up at 6:30 and drove 50 miles and found these. What a disappointment....I really thought I might fine some old high end stuff. So, I still bought them for $13.00 What are they? They are very solid and might make a good Frankispeaker. Cheers.

They don't look bad, why the disappointment?
 
Hi NY. The ad really made it seem like EV patricians or something like that. When I asked the girl about it, she said she just wanted to talk everything up so people would come. So, 50 miles of anticipating some awsome vintage gear. Not a big deal, It was worth the 13 bucks. Cheers.
 
I was just looking at the badge and realized it is a very thick blue "M" with the thin "A" over it. Cheers.
 
Those old phenolic tweeters were not bad to listen to, cabs look salvagable, probably the woofers too. Fix them up and I bet you will be surprized!

Long shot, I don't know if they used that logo, but possibly Martin's. Mike Martin is a member here, and has provided some great info on his companies older models, inclduding memories of building them when he was a youngin! Here's his profile page, if you scroll through some of the threads he's posted in, you'll see some pictures of their early designs, and see why I think it's possible.

They look a bit like Marantz Imperial 6 speakers. I've seen that logo too, but can't remember what the company was. Should be a pretty decent two way.

googled Marantz and no luck. All their speakers used the Marantz logo. I've seen that logo before too, but can't place it.
 
Open 'em up and see what's inside! :D

There may be some additional clues.

We had a thread here a while back about that exact same logo, and I've seen it before (firsthand) on speakers here in Hong Kong, but I'll be damned if I can recall right now what the full name was. (Grrrr...). But they aren't bad speakers.

Don't "Frankenspeaker" them. Refoam them, recap the crossovers, and listen to them. You may want to adjust the dampening inside a little, and/or add a brace through the middle of the boxes. Other than that, you should be pleasantly surprised. For a drive and $13, you've done well. :thmbsp:
 
That logo has come up before, and my memory is that its American Monitor's badge.
 
American Monitor? I've never heard of that brand and can't find anything about them on the web.
 
Here are shots of the woofer. There are soft felt covers on either side of the alnico mag and the dome on the cone is very delicate see through material. The only marking on the woof is "2402" inked on the side of the mag and "2722" on the back of the cone. The O.D. of the basket is 10" and the O.D. of the cone is 7.5". The crossover is just two resistors twisted together. The mystery continues. Cheers.

That woofer is identical to the ones used in my old Equasound speakers. A very good driver.

Look for 3-digit codes on the frames or cones, then Google 'EIA speaker codes'.

If you're lucky they'll be on a list.

Those look like a pair that I found in some Omega speakers. Nice big Alnico slug!
