A co-worker a few years ago upgraded his home system and dumped his old system here at work. I stumbled upon these items last week and was told to either take them or trash them, being an audio guy I of course kept them. :D So here is what I got:

M-85 Amp
DSP-A3090 A/V Receiver
TX-480 Tuner

Now I already know the M-85 is a fine amp, it's already hooked up at home and it sounds wonderful. The DSP-A3090 A/V Receiver and the TX-480 Tuner I'm not so sure about. Would the DSP-A3090 make a good pre-amp for the M-85? How good a tuner is the TX-480? I'm just wondering if I should use the DSP or find a different pre-amp and use the TX-480 as a tuner if it is decent. Thanks in advance.

s.o.b.! not easy to beat a free M-85, even on a good day.

ditch the a/v receiver and get a stereo yamaha preamp that mates well with the M-85. i'm sure someone will have an idea which ones to look for/avoid. i've always figured that with all the extra circuitry, an a/v receiver usually won't sound as clean.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I almost bought a C-85 off some guy this weekend but he changed his mind (he decided to sell his amp and pre amp together). In the future I will keep an eye out for a pre amp but for now I'm going to try using the a/v receiver and see how it sounds, doesn't cost me anything except time.

I'll try to post some pics tomorrow.
 
Just make sure to use the pre out signal, you will have to remove the jumpers. And also make sure that the pre is set to stereo or auto, not 5.1 or somthing.

You might also try to use the digital in from a CD-P, it might just be that the converter in the 3039 is better than in the CD-P!

And a thing, the DSP-A3090 was TOTL in 1996 at a price of $ 2.436,- here in Europe and a little less in the US. The 3090 is NOT a cheep plastic thing!

If you wish to pair the M-85 with a Yamaha pre at similar level as the amp I would sugest: C-60/65, C-80/85, CX-1000, C-2x (these I have tried with the amp), there is also the C-2a, CX-830, CX-2 and CX-1. The budget one would be the C-60/65 and CX-630, the rest do not come cheep.

You got a steal there my friend.
 
That DSP should be able to walk all over a C-85..But the C-85 is one hell of a preamp..Wish I had one.(C-85)...

Thanks, the jumpers were already removed so the previous owner must have used this system that way. Also, thanks for the guide, I got all the user manuals but not the guide.

I set everything up last night and gave it a listen. It sounds wonderful, by far the best sound system I have ever had, I am one happy :banana:

I took some pictures but the batteries in my camera died, I'll get some new ones in it tonight and will upload some pics when I get home.
 
Sorry for the delay in posting a pic, been spending too much time listening to the new setup. :music: The DSP is a very nice A/V reciever, I like all the digital audio ins on it, I've got my cable box going into it digitally and will probably hook up my DVD and CD players that way as well.

Anyway, here is a picture of the system, the Jensen on top is just an FM radio antenna.

You have got to be kidding me! That is almost as good as the guy who posted yesterday someone was giving him his "old, piece of junk, obsolete" Audio Research amplifier.

Just goes to show you, there are a lot of people out there who have no idea what they have and are all too happy to part with the stuff. Why can't I find more of them?
