Marantz tone mode- how does it work?

This has me scratching my head as I haven't seen anything like this before.

It reminds me of the tone switch over mode some receivers have but I think it might do something different. Then there is the "Out" "In" that has me really boggled.

This is on a 2385 but I have seen this switch on a bunch of different models.

That's one of the first questions I asked here on AK about my 2250B receiver. The tone in/out work like this. When it's switched to "in" you can use the treble-mid-bass controls and change the tone, i.e. more bass or less midrange, etc. When you have the tone control in the "out" mode, the three tone adjustment knobs have no effect on the sound. Now the other tone modes control the turnover of the freqs at different levels so the tone controls (mid-treb-bass) have a slightly different effect when they are adjusted. That's the best I can explain it.

I figured the other switches were for the turnover but the "in" and "out" kind of threw me. I did a search and couldn't find anything about it.

Wouldn't it have been easier to label it "on" and "off"?

Well they were labeled 'correctly', that is in the OUT position the tone knobs are OUT of the circuit so don't work, whne IN they are IN the circuit and affect the sound. How are you liking that 2385? I really enjoy mine!
