What to do with a pair of HH Scott Woofers

I recently traded for a pair of H.H. Scott 12" alnico magnet woofers. I would like to use them for a 3-way system. Since the budget is small, I'd like to make use of what drivers and crossovers I already have on hand. Everything is 8 ohm.

Here's what I have in the way of midranges:

4" Technics closed-back cones from T-400's (mid 70's?)
8" Altec alnico magnet woofers from Model 1's
7" Wharfedale's I think came from W-70's
Olson horns from S-777's (tube amp speakers) w/matching tweets
4" Wharfedale cones from Dovedale's w/matching tweets
Jensen sonodomes w/matching tweets

For tweets, I have:

Epi 1" domes from 80's two-way bookshelfs
M&K 1" domes
Kenwood horns from KL-999dx's
Wharfedale domes from Dovedale's
Olson bullet tweeters from S-777's
Jensen sondomes

I have several 3-way crossover pairs (I can always re-cap):

Old Radio Shack universals (in a metal box w/control pots)
Jensen's w/pots
Unknown universals no pots
Speco universals no pots
Olson S-777's w/pots
Wharfedale's from Super 6's w/pots

I'm trying to find a use for the Altec woofers. I'd love to be able to use these as mids. They were crossed over with a 2 mf cap. Using an online chart, that equates to about an 8k crossover. The EPI domes sound very nice. Any thoughts here?

I'm also thinking the Jensen sonodomes would work well.

Problem is, I have no idea what these Scott woofers came from. That means I don't know any of the parameters, power handling, response, efficiency, manufacturer, sealed or ported, cabinet volume, etc. If anyone recognizes these, any info would be helpful!

I am very open to suggestions here!

i could build a dozen experimental pairs quicker than i could read all the posts in that thread. that's not counting all the links.

Just a thought, though it's gonna' cost your $100.+ Go to Parts Express and buy one of their woofer testers. It hooks up to your computer, and your speaker, runs some test through it and generates the parameters. In fact, I think the latest woofer tester tests all speakers, not just woofers. A little money up front, but might be worth it if you do a lot of speaker projects.

way ahead of you, Ohighway. they have the same tester with a free digital scale for the same price. if the budget allows next payday, i'll try to order one. i have several speaker building projects in the dream stage, this will come in handy. do i need any other tools (test equipment) for this chore?

Honestly I don't know if you need any other equipment. If you contact someone at Parts Express ( tech help ??) they could probably let you know.

If you do get one, let me know how it works out. I don't own one, but it seems like it might be just the ticket to quantify those "unknown" and "orphan" drivers that you'd like to use in a system.

will do. i hooked 'em up last night with the altec model 1 woofs used as mids. the model 1's are not efficient enough. scratch one idea off the list. then i tried them with a 2-way crossover and the epi tweets. not bad. i'll play with some of the other mids and tweets as i get time. i did a google on hh scott and found a lot of info on their electronics, but nothing about their speakers. i'm still hoping someone here on AK has some info i can use.

Before spending $100 on the software at Parts Express take a look at the software on this site. It can be down loaded for free and may be able to do the same functions.

BTW. They have a complete website the goes through the steps of building a complete home theater speaker system so it gives steps on using the software as well.

Good luck with the project. Per your comment about the two-way crossover and EPI tweet. I'd have a hard time imagining as setup that WOULDN'T sound good with that tweeter (as they're a personal favorite of mine)
I have a pair of Scott speakers around here , model S-15 IIRC. Unfortunately I cannot tell you anything much about them. Can't remember what size woofer they have in them.

I used them with the PE planar tweet, and a cap to bring the tweet in at about 3K,

Even though the tweet was rated at 94db, I found I had to add about 4db of treble boost to get natural sound. I should have flipped the woofer polarity in the system but I never did. Might have helped.

I know...measure, measure, measure. LOL.

thanks for the info so far, keep it coming. i will check into the software mentioned when i get time. yes, i love the epi tweeters. they came from a pair of early 80's two-way bookshelfs (small). i had two other pair, but i sold them. the pair i kept has a square mounting plate (plastic), and about a 1" dome. they are slightly more efficient than the scotts, an l-pad would be needed. i'd rather use some older tweeters with the scotts. i wanted to use the altecs as mids, but they are just too inefficient. the model one's are rated at 86 db at 1 watt 1 meter. the scotts are probably a couple db's higher. i have no idea what to do with these altec woofers, and i have another complete pair of model 1's.

using trial and error, i found that the scotts sound great as mids used with the utah woofers shown in my avatar! the kenwood horns are in the lead for tweeters at the moment, but i have a few other pairs to test.

after some experimentation, i have decided to go with the technics mids, and either the epi or the m&k tweeters. i've started on some temporary cabinets with some scrap lumber i had laying around. when i get the baffles cut out, i'll post some pics.

operation frankenspeaker is underway. i think i've settled on the technics mids and the m&k tweeters with jensen crossovers, but i want to see how the woofers sound in the box before i make the final decision. i've started cutting the lumber. the baffles and backs measure 16" wide by 24" tall. the center of the woofer is 8" from the bottom of the baffle. the sides measure 25 1/4" tall and 16" deep. the tops and bottoms are 16" square. i'm using 3/4 by 1 1/2" pine for internal bracing and sealing purposes. internally, they will be 13 3/4" deep, 16" wide, and 24 1/4" tall. i'll use screws and elmer's to hold it all together. i intend to have the front baffle removable. it will be screwed on, and rope caulk will be used to seal it up. i'll post more pics as the project progresses.

got the sides glued and screwed. ran out of glue. i'll hit wally world tomorrow afternoon. here are some pics. there will be braces across the tops and bottoms.

no science involved here, folks. the cabinet dimensions were determined by the size of the scrap lumber i had laying around. i had the front and rear baffles already sized (they were shelf boards), and cut the rest to fit them. even the screws are second hand, they came from a console i parted out. i've got about 7 bucks in the 3/4 x 1 1/2 and 2 bucks in the glue.

on a whim, i tried the scotts with a pair of utah mid and tweet horns. i like! the cabs are not sealed yet, so i'll try to get that done over the weekend, and i'll mount the horns. i still need to scrounge something to stuff the cabs with, and i'll have to experiment further with crossovers. for the moment i'm using jensens, but they definitely need new caps, and they are just first order. still, the sound is pretty good!

done! hooked them up for a preliminary listen, not bad. new caps will definitely help, as will stuffing. i'll pull the drivers back out before i go to bed to let the silicon dry.
