Ohm Omnidirectional speakers?

Saw a pair of Ohm speakers at a thrift shop. About 3.5 feet high, trapezoidal, with a cloth cover over the top. Pulling the cover reveals what looks like an upside-down drain cover - metal cylinder full of holes, with cloth under it. possibly a driver under there?

Connectors looked pretty stout. 4 ohm impedance.

Can anyone tell me anything about them? Should I go try to pick them up?

The original Walsh design. Can be difficult to drive (needs big power) and check for rotting foam. I think they can be rebuilt, but expect $$$ to do so.
 
By the description of the drain cover with holes- this sounds more like the black perforated can that fits over the driver arrangement on the later Ohm Walshes, not the earlier ones- I think the earlier models were the exposed tin man's hat inverted cone.

The later ohm walshes came in a variety of flavors- 1s, 1XOs, 2s, 2XOs, 3s, 3XOs, 4s, 4XOs, ect.

Most are 4 or 6 ohm.

All are very good.


My guess is 1s/1XOs, or 2s/2XOs.



I'd grab 'em.

If you haven't RUN back and GRABBED them, the Audio Gods will be withdrawing some of that Karma soon, since they are offering you a real bragging-rights SCORE, and you are on the verge of snubbing them and blowing it by hanging around here reading this post, instead. Yes, go back and get them -NOW! Those are GOOD speakers! :music: :thmbsp:

Joking aside, Ohms are, indeed, nice speakers, and worth getting. Those "omnidirectional" tops give a very nice soundstage, and make them 'audiophile" grade speakers. They were among the best in their day, and can still hold their own against many, many speakers out there. [I'm not sure if all Ohms were like that, but the ones I've heard certainly were.]
 
If they have the cans on top, they are only semi omni's. The A's and F's were the only true omni Walsh's.
 
I will try to grab them. It's a little more complicated than them just sitting at a thrift. Will explain more later. Just need to put some pieces of the plan together.

3.5 feet tall? Then they must be one of the very very good ones...? Please manage to get around those 'complications'.

If they are a bargain and you don't like them :scratch2:, nearby AK'ers will offer a good trade for you--I certainly would--and won't insinuate you are at all daft for not holding onto them. (They don't play well with Tubes if that's your niche.)
