Audigy 2 ZS soundcard mod

I've mentioned this a few times on the forum so here it is.

Inspired by the prevalent X-Fi mods at head-fi and others I adapted it to the Audigy 2 ZS

OK guess I should state this.

First things first, replacing the stock opamps, they are terrible! I used National LM4562 dual opamps, there are four of them to make up all 8 channels (7.1 sound). They are labeled 1,2,3 and 4 in the diagram below.

Opamp 1 is for the front left and right channels, only this needs to be replaced for stereo operation.

Next order of business, coupling caps. Each opamp has four caps, circled in groups and labeled as C1, C2... in the diagram above. These block DC between the opamp and DAC. There are no coupling between the opamp and final output. I removed and shorted these.

With no coupling of course, lots of DC at the output. Heres where those lines labeled 1 through 8 come in. Each of the 8 channels has 2 transistors right at the output used for muting during computer startup/shutdown. We don't want any sticking transistors in our signal path! Out they come. They can be shorted like so...

But wait! What happened to coupling caps you say? This is a perfect place for them before the output! I soldered in a 4.7uF Jantzen Z-standard polypropylene cap to bridge each of the above labeled connections. So now we have 0mV DC offset! (as apposed to the ~30mV DC measured on a stock card)

Moving along to power, I replaced the main power filter cap (as labeled in diagram) with a panasonic FC 16V 2200uF. This is the main power filter for the card, some people claim it improved bass but I thinks thats BS. Its mostly for the digital side of things, more of a 'why not?' replace it kinda thing. I think it can help resolve popping and clicking issues some people have with the card.

I also replaced the caps labeled as C5 and C6 which I believe are the front stereo opamp and votage regulator power supply caps, respectively. I just used some high uF similar voltage caps I had leftover.

The opamp I have marked "in" on the diagram is responsible for the microphone input amplification. I don't use this so I left it as is.


Finished things off with a EMI shield made out of an anti-static bag.

This is as far as I've gone so far, It's been an ongoing project, adding a little at a time, tweaking, listening.

The caps are all of a really crappy brand, recapping the whole thing would be a good idea, as would replacing most components. Creative under engineered the thing pretty severely, lots of room for rebuilding some of the circuits. But the line has to be drawn somewhere.

I think I've reached the point of diminishing returns at this point, as for the sound... WOW, much better! :banana: I could throw lots of adjectives at you but just take my word for it, simply better in ever aspect. :music: Most difference came from opamp upgrade and coupling caps.

So far its the best digital source I've heard, which is a very short list and doesn't include anything remotely high end.

Looks good. I tried this once with an Audigy 4, but I had a hard time with those SMD components, ended up scraping the card and getting another with better components. The only thing is what about ventalation? The bag may impede the cooling and if I recall, the main chip get fairly warm...
 
I've had it running 27/7 since adding the bag a few months ago, no issues with heat yet. The chip does get a little warm to the touch, but I don't think its enough to worry.
 
That's a really awesome mod. I checked the specs on those 4562's and they are outstanding. Question - what were the original op amps? Curious to compare the two, spec-wise

Front stereo used a JRC High Current 4556A (which is really meant to drive headphones and un-amplified PC speakers, not a Hi-Fi stereo setup).

The stock caps are all Jamicon's :thumbsdn:

Sounds like a good mod then.. yeah, those stock op amps leave a lot to be desired, spec-wise.

Now I need to get some good tools again.. damn magnifying glass for one (eyes aren't like they used to be). Did the replacement flat-packs come precut or did you have to form them yourself?

Sorry, old-school lingo for the op amp IC's. We used to have those surface-mount IC's come with the leads sticking straight out from the package and have to form them before mounting.

Bend 'em down, then eyeball it good and bend the leads back out. Then cut carefully across each side to give each lead a good "foot" to solder onto the pad.

Like I said.. need some good tools first here .. most important will be the magnifying glasses, etc.. :yes:

They are SOIC package, not DIP style, so they come pre-formed and ready to go :thmbsp:

Both styles are available, though the DIP would not be easy to fit on the surface mount pads.

SOIC = Flat pack :D Although I did work on some gear that did have DIPs surface-mounted too - nightmares, I tell ya. the pins had to be bent to about 30 degrees out and shortened to fit on the pads. Nasty stuff...

Anyway.. definitely a cool mod you have there. I'll try just the op amps and caps first to see how that improves the quality. I wonder tho - for those typical on-board realtek's, do they have a separate buffer amp or are those all on a single chip? I wonder if there is any room for improvement with the onboard realteks as well... hmmm... :scratch2:

Oh I gotcha, I was thinkin it was DIP with straight pins.

Iv'e got a few comps with onboard and I've wondered how they work. Cause I sure don't see any opamps or anything. More like everything in a single chip, no wonder they sound so bad :yuck:
 
I have an old Audigy 4.All i did was replace a bunch of the electrolytics and boy did it make a difference in sound.
 
Nice mod the Caps are bigger than the sound card! I have an X-Fi Xtream Gamer PCI card but I took it out. I was getting noises in the damn thing, change mode and it changes the amount of noise. I think Music mode got rid of most of it but still there. I updated my BIOS to the latest version and that also helped a bit but once again there is still some noise. I knew they had problems with NForce chipsets for the longest time. I dunno I gave up on it, ditched the card and now use the SPDIF out from the onboard REALTEK audio to my 2.1 set that happens to have digital inputs.
 
National LM4562 dual opamps

On the main page of these here : http://www.national.com/pf/LM/LM4562.html#Availability they list the designations, HA, MA, MAX, and NA. Which one of these do i need? I plan on modding out a Audigy 2 that I have had forever. I have a broken input jack on it so im looking to get another card any way, but I want to try this. If it works I might just replace the input jack :) I have some 420uf 16v I pulled off a pc board so im gonna use thos as cap replacements..
Im just not sure which LM456 I need to order ?
 
Nice !! thanks for the quick reply. I just ordered up a bunch more 470uf/16v caps Panasonic. Black Gates are just too pricey to put on this old thing. Cool now I'll have to go get on ordering this chip.... :):smoke:

A question.. if i want to replace line in op-amp (i want to record from analogue source), which one do i have to replace? the one labeled "in" in the pic, or this one is only for mic input?
