Fried A/5 opinions needed

jimbofish

for TRULY GREAT MUSIC
I have an opportunity to purchase a pair of Fried A/5 speakers for a very reasonable price. There's nothing about them on the Fried website and I wasn't able to come up with anything searching AK or Google.

Anyone have any personal experiences or opinions of them? :music:

The woofer looks like a replacement.:scratch2:

I have a set of A/3 and they have no logo on the dustcaps.

Haven't heard of the A5's, but I have a pair of the A3's. I wasn't able to get any info, even from Fried themselves. They said due to the age they no longer have any info. What I can tell you is that I love the A3's. They aren't great for rock, but most everything else they do is magic. If you can get them at a good price, I wouldn't hesitate. Mine only have 8" woofers and a tweeter. You would be amazed the extended bass that the 8" produces.

no logo on mine either. I agree, replacement. But I would still listen to them and see what you think. Plus you can try and lower the price if you like them.

They now have a replacement woofer available.

I saw that on the website. $90 for two new woofers delivered is not bad at all. The asking price for the pair in question is about half that, and they've been for sale for two weeks, so I'm being cautious as it sounds too good to be true. :scratch2:

Is there anything distinctive or unique that I should look for when I see them that would indicate that they're genuine? I have never seen or heard Frieds before, although I have heard the name.

Grab them and order the replacement woofers. The tweet looks original. Make sure both are working. If the cabs aren't beat to hell, I'd grab them.

I doubt you'll regret it.:thmbsp:

I agree. Well worth the cost. As long as you can get the replacement. The woofers don't come up for sale often.

As to if they are real - there isn't much to tell you. There are no labels on the parts other than round gold stickers with single digit numbers on them (ie - 2, 8, etc)

The price is so low now that its not even a issue, although I always ask if that's the best they can do on the price. Sometimes it works.

This another "I upgraded to all Bose" deal. :thmbsp:

Looking closer at their website, I see that there are varying prices for the woofer replacement program... from $70 to $185. They list the C, Q, and Beta series. I've sent an email to see if they have them for the A series. It's possible they may not be available.

Is the A series an earlier model?

1993-95 $825/pr new!

I copied this is from the Fried webpage...

About Fried Products Corporation: Fried Products Corporation was founded by a group of audiophiles, including the late Bud Fried, in 2004 to preserve, protect and advance the art and science of loudspeaker design and production. The company has been producing and shipping loudspeakers since the third quarter of 2004. It continues to actively grow its dealer network, and its product line.

I'm confused about the dates... were there two different companies? A re-opening?:scratch2:

Irving M. Fried died in 2005 at the age of 84. Good to see him active in a passion of his in the last years of his life.

ps- at approx. $50 you're getting these for and even if woofers run $185, if these are transmission line speakers and typical of an IMF/fried design, that's still, in my book, worthy.

Update: The logo on the woofers is "Acoustic USA". I'm not familiar with that name... car speakers?:scratch2:

Still waiting to hear from Fried Co. as to availability of replacement woofers.

I would still move forward. Even if the replacements are $185, that is still a good deal on A5's. There was someone that was selling A3's around here a while back for $150 or 200 and they were gone almost instantly. So I don't think you would be over spending with the A5's.

I'm still not sure how to tell whether the rest of the speaker is genuine. :confused:The fact that no one else has bought them in over 3 weeks makes me a little leery of what these actually are. At this point, I'm half expecting to find that they're spelled FREID or FRIEND... aka white van! :yikes: I have to make a 130 mile round trip just to have a look at them. Is there a logo or name plate on the back that is distinctive? What type of terminals should I expect to find?
