Found a Pair of Jbl-L56's

I have a pair of L-56's and he had the the foams professionally redone (?) with black accordion style surrounds and I haven't heard them on my new set up yet but I know they originally came with foam surrounds. My question is should I remove and re-foam them back to factory specs or leave them alone yet untested? I know that sounds foolish yet unheard but perhaps it helped with the bass heavy problem some report. Also I will need some new grill material is there anything available for a do it yourself project?

That's what i'll do in the am.

The grills are brownish.

I plan on keeping these at least the drivers Perhaps they could be a candidate for econwaves?
I'll tell the lady I plan on selling them but that's not going to happen since she is buying another camera :nono:.
Any recommendations on a source for the crossover caps?

PS. Thanks for the link for the x-overs because they seem to be lacking in the mid-high range and I'm hoping a recap will help them.

Update the woofers are not Jbl they look like some off market brand so I'm off to try to find the originals...major bummer:thumbsdn::thumbsdn::thumbsdn:
So if anyone knows of a set of 125hr's or 118H's keep me in mind. Man this bites!

125HR = 127H, (not H-1) which come up frequently on eBay.

118H are kinda rare....

Too bad about the woofers :( But sounds like you may make it right. I got some Brown grille cloth from Parts Express. Just go down to the link at the bottom of the page for their website.

Yeah I knew something was wrong but like always I was in a hurry and made a mistake of sorts. The price was right though. Are you speaking of the brown cloth that is here : http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=260-339 ?. Looks easy enough to apply some contact cement to the edges one side at a time and apply, if there is another way let me know I need all the help I can get at times :yes:.

Mike, That is the grille cloth and thats about it. I just redid the grilles on my DLK/2's and it was not hard. I got 2 units of the cloth and have a ton leftover.I used some 3M Super77 spray adhesive and a staple gun. they came out great :) This was my first reclothing (word?) and it took me a couple of hours, but I was going slow to make sure I did'nt screw it up. The cloth is not as thin as the photos show. The flash made that happen :D

You did a nice job on them and they do look really good. What color are those because if their brown I might want to go with black to get close to the JBL darker brown or I can order both colors I suppose. I have some 1/2" stainless steel staples that I can use to hold the cloth along with the Super77 .

They are a little darker than the photo shows but I have not seen the JBL brown. They did match the DLK brown good though so I would assume they would be close. The 1/2" staples should work good :) I used 1/4" staples

Here is a photo before. The brown was almost identical.

I want to make them right but Im having a hell of a time finding a pair of 127H. I'm hoping against the odds that I can find a pair. I've seen a few pair of 127H-1's but I guess their unusable in the L-56's. I'll just have to wait my turn :scratch2:

I will say that Howard's wax and feed really did a nice job on bringing back the wood!

Update I found a pair of 127h's and plan on re foaming them if their up to it. Thanks guys.

I obtained a set of 127H's and re-foamed them today so by say monday I will know how much better they sound over the guitar speakers they replaced!

After I had acquired a set of L-56's, I Googled for more info and came across a senior member's post on the JBL Heritage site that stated a viewpoint that the woofer utilized in the L-56 was of the type the should be used in a sealed cabinet of much larger volume. Any credence to this and if so would Zilchplugz and more fiberglass fill be an alternative:scratch2:? Thanks

I coulda sworn my two pair l-46s I sold last Christmas were rubber surrounds.

The T/S parameters for these drivers indicate they are well-suited to closed-box alignments, yes.

The L-Series products using them retained an element of "West Coast" bass, and that may be mitigated by closing the ports with ZilchPlugz, if desired. As with L100s et al., however, the power handling goes down. In smaller boxes like these, the sealed air volume affords some protection against over-excursion, but thermal limits (and demagnetization of the non- "H" alnico versions) become factors if you crank the bass.

In large closed-box alignments, excursion is more the controlling parameter in limiting SPL. Run the calcs for any proposed design.... :yes:

You've got me on that one. I do believe 117H and 118H may have used an early rubber composite surround, yes. There's a couple of members over on LHF who'll know, or it may be stated in the advertising lit.

In any case, if they were more stable and durable than standard foam formulations of the day, it was only marginally so, alas... :pity:

Yep, my L46s had rubber-ish surrounds, bordering on not-very-rubbery-at-all. Actually, four of the six got stiff, but two of them cracked without even getting brittle. All foam now, Rick Cobb supplied (and asked specifically which type of surround it had previously, so as to supply the correct foamage).
