Wharfedale W70D

Just picked these up on CL for $30. I grew up with Wharfedale W40D's and always wanted to see what the bigger brothers sound like.

Very natural sounding. Clear highs. Loads of midrange. Bass seems recessed.

I'd like to recap and refinsih thes beautiful speakers - sorry I don't have camera with me - will post pictures when I get home this weekend.

Anything else I should do to refreshen these W70D's?

I am quite new to this rebuild and reapir stuff. Does recaping the crossover restore the bass???

Typically not. Caps are usually used in mid an tweeter crossover. Though I just found ou my JBL L36 have large cap going to woofer. So in that case if the deterioration of cap is holding back bass it might.

But generally speaking re-capping does not enhance bass. If the woofer has foam surround, stiff rubber surround, or requires re-doping likt the treated cloth surrounds on old AR or KLH woofer, refoanig or redoping will greatly enhance bass response.

My Wharfedales have non-treated wool surrounds. So I'm thinking there's not much I can do - but will wait for Wharfedale experts to chime in.

Yes, rotate the woofers 180 degrees. The surrounds can sag and many have suggested this trick to keep the VC from rubbing. I have access to a pristine pair from the original owner (my uncle) but it has a separated tweeter that needs to be repaired. They are supposed to sound nice with tubes and Jazz but it's been 30 years since I've heard a pair and don't remember what they sound like. They sure look cool though. :yes:
 
One thing I experienced with the W6's I got a while back was the same as you, bass
was much less then I would have expected, I let play a few times throughout the first
week I got them and the bass actually woke up quite a bit, they hadn't been played in
a while from the last owner and the surrounds were probably loosening up on me.

Might want to let them a play a while an see if you experience something simular. :)
 
Thanks Kegger and Dufinator. Both ideas sound excellent. I would like to hear what these sound like with tubes - but alas I've not taken that plunge yet. Could take me to the HNL - whole 'nother level! :D
