Still on the truck - nutdriver in one hand and camera in the other :yes:Looks promising-excuse the dust.It's an SK22B model. Seperate tuner,pre,and amp.I haven't looked at the preamp/control assembly yet,so can't say what it really contains.Amp is tube rectified w/English Motorola EZ81/6CA4,and uses 2- 12AX7's,and 2- EL84's.Any ideas,possibilities?I'm thinking a small case for the preamp/amp and use and use it for a small system.Or whatever.I'm not attached to it yet.Anybody see this chassis before?

Still going back and forth to the truck with the shopvac,getting numbers,and trying figure out where to put this thing...... Might make a good companion amp for the Braun tabletop radio I picked up at the KC 'fest.Surely this amp can coaxed into running good.Is the amp worth a stab at it,or is it too "bottom of the line"to put a little effort into?
 
Terry that is a nice little unit there a small set amp and all.
Were do you all find these things? I have not found one here yet!
 
THe power amp is well worth rescuing (as I listen to Jerilynn Steele singing Rescue Me on A Prairie Home Companion as I type this).
 
thanks,think I'll keep this one,then:yes: and Endspec-this is one I just ran across at a garage sale.I went to look at a wire feed welder(sold:sigh:)but 10 bucks dropped on this was OK with me! Mike Stehr...nice job on your friend's amp!
 
Thanks Tom Bavis:thmbsp: big help.I haven't even taken it out of the cabinet to look it over yet-much less start a search for a schematic.The photos are in the back of my truck as soon as I got home,and the chassis number is the only one I could see out there.
 
Tom-looks like the preamp is a passive assembly that connects to the amp chassis w/field wires.I'm thinking the tuner (when I get the #'s in the morning) may be the only other schematic.
 
Make sure you get ALL that dust out of there before you fire it up. That dust looks like it likes to burn.
 
I don't think there's any such thing as a bad sounding SE EL84 amp. Clean her up and do a recap, then make a nice base out of that leftover bloodwood.:thmbsp:
 
those little Motorola SE EL84 amps are really nice . . . still trying to track one down myself to compare to my magnavox brethren :D

Reminds me - gotta put another coat of oil on the wood for th' Conn's.This project is gonna have to take a back seat to them for a bit.But it sounds like this one will awright:yes:....the guy at the garage sale said he cleans rental,estate,and insurance claim(?)houses.He took my name and number for future tube "finds".Slowly gettin' stuff together-basement test bench,variac,studio's been in the works down there for awhile.I think this one oughta be my solo project.When I start,I'll be askin' you all for advice!

If you are gonna gut it, that tuner looks like it would be neet in a seperate enclosure! Does it even have a seperate power x-frmr?

Most old console units had funny tuners that read vertically instead of horizontal, making conversions to a stand alone hard.

DEFINATLY save the SE amp there! looks like it even has decent sized OPT's!
If you don't like the motorola circuit, rewire it for an RH84 and I garuntee you will like it. The RH84 will do 4 watts RMS per channel @ 1% THD IIRC. My maggie is set up like that and it sounds wonderful. First thing to do to it will be seperating the cathode resistors in the output stages, as almost all stereo SE console amps had a shared cathode resistor, which causes crosstalk.
 
The tuner chassis is an SK 42,and has an onboard 6X4 rectifier.Also- the speaker system is "Golden Voice" 8" 2-ways w/about 3" cone tweeters.Haven't had time to pull all the components yet,but made up my mind that the cabinet isn't a keeper at all.Now if I ran across one like was posted in the 'Halloween Haul' post in the tube forum,I'd keep it as is.
The brass knobs and control panel on this one looks like they might have to be part of the finished product,though:yes:...looks kinda classy to me... Just not convinced I want the tuner-I have a cool tabletop that would work,and look slicker than hell.
 
thanks,Ken- I think Thespeakerdude8 and a couple others here are pretty much on the right track with these little amps.You guys gotta remember I probably forgot more than I learned - so lot's of :lurk: and askin' Q's. Projects are backin' up! But lots of good people here-I'm in the right place:D
