Doorbell wire

Redboy

a few good watts
I got some with a replacement garage door opener - it's meant to run from the button on the wall to the opener... It's what I would call doorbell wire, your basic dual conductor solid core 22 awg copper wire in uninspiring white insulation with a red stripe down one side. This particular wire I have is marked TYPE CL2X.

On a whim (and inspired by some posts from a couple of AKers whose opinions I respect) I cut a couple 7 ft pieces and popped them into my system. I'm running a low-powered SET amp into Tannoy Golds.

Folks, this stuff is damn nice! I'm certain it is very system dependent, as these things often are, but in my system I haven't heard much better!

I wouldn't try this stuff with sledgehammer SS amps into power hungry speakers, but if you're running low powered tubes into fairly efficient speakers, it's definitely worth a listen! And the price of admission is negligible.

I don't like to use anything but 18 guage to 26 guage solid core copper wire for my single ended amps to high efficiency speakers.

Just my fancy of course!

Yeah, I was truly surprised. I'm sitting here, trying to think of what's missing... can't come up with anything.

I use solid core for all internal wiring and some other misc projects. Teflon jacket OFC though, lol.

solid core is the way to go (for me) when it comes to speaker wire. Made a big difference in how the B&W speakers sound when compaired to stranded wire, in my system.

Teflon is best but even generic wire seems to work great. I am only running 15-29 watts, the wire I have is 18g. I have used both silver and copper.

Hmm :scratch2:

I recently replaced the cables running to my modded Tannoy Oxfords. After a bit of experimenting, I'm now using 10AWG stranded OFC for bass, and 22AWG solid copper for treble - did the same inside when I rewired them, too.
Well... It sounds great to me :music:

I know someone who used to swear by the stuff & used it for everything...

Hey Nate, I went and picked up 20 feet of red/white 20 guage bell wire. It comes loosly twisted, did you leave it just like that? I'm rolling drivers in my 2A3, so I'm gonna go up and try it at the same time. I'll report back.:thmbsp:

Just wire it up, Jay - no worries about twisting or shielding or fancy talk. See what you think.

Ha, I like it Nate. Seemed to give me a little air, and maybe a touch more sparkle on light cymbol strikes. Whoda thunk it?

Yep, that's the type of stuff I'm hearing, too. This is working out very nicely with the 2A3s.

I'll save the jumbo name-brand cables for other amps.

Updated my signature...

I had totally forgot about this forum, and boy am I glad to be reminded of it. Seems like tweeking can get you beat up around some spots.:D To me, it's one of the most fun parts of the hobby. Especially finding something like this that's cheap but works. Speaking of cheap but outstanding, if you have anything that runs 6DJ8s, try an RCA 6FW8 (drops in). There scarce but when you find them they are a couple bucks. I just had them beat three different Amperex 6DJ8 variants including some branded Hewlett Packard that I really like.(drivers in my 2A3 job) The best way I can describe them is smooth and detailed.:music:

Ooooh, I'm going to have to find some of those for my Seduction! Gonna check the stash now...

Hey, you tried it! I found some 18 gauge solid core insulated (2-conductor) at the HD and have been running it in since last Sunday night. Highs do have a more "shimmering" quality to them. Jury's still out.

Certianly made the wire run under the transition strip at the pass through a lot smoother sailing.

Well, I'm still really liking this sound. No complaints, really. Definition seems a little better.

Makes me wonder how the teflon insulated stuff some of you fellas mentioned would be different. Can you point me to sources?

Cable importance/irrelevance depends on the type and amount of liquor consumed.

I use Kimber Silver Streak and Straightwire Black Silc bi-wired in my main system, just in case.

However, in the vintage system, I use 18ga. stranded, and cheap interconnects.

With enough Captain Morgan, I can't tell the difference.

On this stuff, the difference can be dramatic and immediate. In my case it was both going from Tributaries flat 14ga. stranded copper to 18ga solid core shielded copper. Not saying that I prefer one over the other yet. However, I wouldn't expect anyone to believe that without listening nor do I care really. I ain't say'in, I'm just say'in.

Although you do have a point about the cocktail consumption :D

... can't tell the difference between your main system and the vintage system?! :D
