Qb restoration completed!

I took everyones advice concerning what needed to be done to bring them back to life.

Here's the laundry list:
New Dayton poly caps in the crossover from Parts Express
Internal bracing
Resealed all drivers with rope calk
Refinished cabinets with new cherry veneer; see MikeCh's veneer tutorial thread here for the step by step
Cabinets stuffed with polyester fiber fill
Rebuilt one grill that was broken in two
Replaced old grill cloth with new cloth from Parts Express

I'm happy with the way they look and sound. I paired them up with my trusty Sansui G-801 in our bedroom and it's a sweet combination. Clear clean highs with a sweet midrange and plenty of tight bass. I was concerned before I rebuilt them that the bass was lacking. But I was playing them with a BPC Kenwood with somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 wpc. With the Sansui cranking out over 125 wpc there is plenty of bass as well as headroom.

Bravo! Nice job Army. I must like the cherry stain because I've cherry Watco-ed my last four pair of cabinet refurbes....working on WTLC refurbs right now. Walnut, natural or cherry. Enjoy.
 
heck ya, those did turn out great! did you ever figure out what that black crap was?

tubed, what are you doing about the black plastic covering on the top of the WTLCs? i've been debating what to do about mine for a while...

I'm looking out for some grey-green foam similar to what has disinetgrated...I believe the foam was to act as a dust cap and to keep the 360 degree shape. Still waiting to refoam( the woofers). I actually have never heard a pair before:scratch2:.
 
Lovely! Qbs are one of my favorites. Always had plenty of bass for me on 40 WPC, but glad to hear they sing even better with your Sansui.

you'll like them! but i was talking about the black vinyl-ish covering over the upper half of the speaker, the part that's not veneered. it tends to peel off at the edges and i finally just pulled it all off. figured you'd be replacing that too. but i don't want to steal Army's thunder. and you should start a WTLC restore thread! i for one would be very interested to follow it.

Army, i think you'll notice they get even a little smoother as the caps burn in.

Very sharp looking! Do you have any pictures of the insides? i.e., how you added bracing, the revised crossovers, etc.

Sorry Geoff I didn't get any pics of the insides. I used a 1" hardwood dowel hand fitted from the baffle to the back of the cab in between the midrange and the woofer, which made them pretty rigid.

Great work with the Qb's!

My son has been enjoying some Qa's for a while and I'm sure those Qb's sound better and look great to boot.
