Wharfedale W60 internals - missing midrange??

I picked these up today locally. Opened the first one up and it appears a midrange driver may be missing. The tweeter (hidden in the wooden box, which is removed in one picture) and woofer appear original. Opened the other speaker and there is no hole in the baffle for the mysterious missing midrange.

Also, I was thinking these are supposed to be acoustic suspension speakers, but both of them have a tuble port installed that looks original. And. other than the fiberglass mat glued to the back panel, there is not dampening material at all in the speakers. (There back panels is sand filled, :scratch2:, though)

Plan to clean the tweeter pots and replace the 12uF capacitors.

Am thinking I could just install a plate over the extra front baffle whole (if no midrange was supposed to be there to start with).

Questions:
1. Are these speakers supposed to be ported (2" id X 8.75" long)?
2. Is there supposed to be more acoustic dampening material inside?

Mine are W60's, 3 way, no port. They made several variations.

There's two versions of that speaker - the W60 and W60D, a two way and three way speaker respectively. The three way had the purple donut tweeter in addition to that Super 3 "tweeter".

The W60 had a port as standard, as did the D as far as I know. I think you have a D there, missing its purple donuts.

Edit: Kfa's just turned my theory on it's head, sorry. :(
 
I haven't opened mine yet, but I think ihave the same or close model.
The mid is where yours is, the tube is the same as mine and is a port. I do not have a place for the third driver - mine is a two way. The third hole - it is actually a hole and not just a cut out covered with the grill?

The third hole is all the way through the front baffle board. It's no longer a hole now..... covered it from inside the cabinet with a piece of plywood using glue and wood screws.

Waiting to get some feedback as to whether some acoustic dampening material needs to be added to the cabinet.....probably glued to the sides walls since this is a ported speaker. Hesistant to do it though if Wharfedale didn't originally intended the walls to be covered with fiberglass bats.

Line the walls, i don;t see how it would hurt and will reduce reflections.

Mine are not ported but the cabs are lined which you would think should be stuffed.

Note large mid tube front to back of cab.

W60 details:

W60 and W60C had ports.

W60D did NOT have a port... it was a sealed enclosure with a completely different woofer than the others.

IIRC, W60C had a port and the purple-donut dome tweeter... that's likely what the original poster has...

Well.....I've got the extra driver hole plugged in one speaker, new caps installed in both and some acousta-stuff added to the cabinet walls. All the drivers are original, as indicated by the red band around the magnets.

Now I know what the British dry sound sounds like......rolled off highs I think. Plan to try them out with a few different kinds of music to see what they like.

How do y'all like the "French Provential" finish??!! (not my doing)
