Magnavox 169 monoblocks

59' Maggie Phono consolette' came my way today and so now I have a pair of 169BB 10w mono blocks.

I see potential here but I'll have to strip out the phono stage and work in either a pre for guitar amp or audio.

Anybody have an idea where to get a proper schemo for something like this?

Thanks Tom. That'll come in handy. Its much better than the one supplied with the paperwork that was with it. (basic schematic)

Im wondering what the dif is between the "BB" chassis and the "AA" chassis

Im gonna guess the AA had one amp for just the player unit and the BB had 2 for the external speaker cab. This one came with the external speaker cab also and one amp outputs only to it.

This thing came with All paperwork including inspection tags and sales brochures. Also came with a poster sized info sheet on all the Magnavox TV's for that year. Interestingly it also includes 2 models of stereo consoles. Why only 2, I dont know. There were certainly more models than that for 59'. The consolette isnt on it.

You don't have to strip out the phono stages. There aren't any! I have a couple of those and they are line-level ready. One had the turntable only which had the ceramic cartridge. The other one had a bigger power transformer to support the tuner/preamp.

Both are 10 watts output. One had the 6AN8 AFamp/phase inverter, the othe had the 12AX7.

Thanks Cademan but both of these have 6AN7's on them. One does have a slightly bigger tranny though.

Each has different front end wiring and it looks like one was for the main unit and the other for only the extension cab.

Are yours 169-BB's ?
 
I'm not sure what model they are as I would have to dig them out. If you look at yours, they both still have the cut-outs in place on the sides which are for the added tuner/preamp for some models. One of mine had an octal socket on the side for the connection to the tuner/preamp. I remember re-wiring the one with the 12AX7 to use the 6AN8 so they would match to combine as a stereo setup.

It looks like both of yours have the exact same wiring! The bigger, fat looking resistor like things are not resistors, but are known as bumble bee capacitors. Replace those with the same values as the white ones in the other amp.

This is a record player only unit. No radio in this one.

I may just copy the front end circuit from one of my older VM amps with the same power side setup. Those are fantastic for guitar amps but I was thinking of a monoblock stereo setup since I have umpteen mono chassis' waiting for guitar amp service.

I guess a smart thing to do would be to try them huh?

The guy that I got them from was playing records on it when I came to look so they work ok. There wasnt any noise.

I'll variac them up over tomorrow just to be sure and check.
