Prototype heaven

When I was a young punk engineer at ESS in 1973, I made lots and lots of prototype speaker systems. Since ESS wanted to be known as a cutting-edge, hybrid kind of company, we came up with many unusual box and speaker arrangements. After testing, guess where all those prototype boxes and speakers went! They sure didn't go to the trash bin! They came home with me so I could love and care for them. :music: Here are a couple that landed in my garage. Sometimes there were so many, there wasn't enough room to walk around in there. You can see on the top of these cabinets I had four AMT's (tweeters/mid) for each (the one box in the pic only shows two but there were four tweeters for each.

My neighbors hated me. :butt2:

>Did you save any of the stuff?

Over the years it went to friends and flea markets. I did save a few boxes of the original AMT diaphragms which were highly sought after. All gone now.

>Is there any special reason you oriented the AMT's on their side on top of the cabs?

Yes. Horizontal dispersion was nearly 360 degrees but vertical was more limited. By arranging them as you see, I was able to disperse in both directions.

>Did they toss out the drivers with the prototypes.

Some of them were tossed, mostly woofers because most of them were custom made on-the-spot for the cabinets. The AMT's just kinda floated home with the cabinets somehow....

>remind me a whole lot of John Lennon in that pic

Ironically, I taught John how to write decent songs.

Must have been a blast. How'd you manage to haul those speakers around on your 10-speed Fuji/Peugeot/Schwinn? ;)

T., did you have anything to do with the design of the AMT 3 Rock Monitor? If so, you're my hero. :D

Regards,
Gordon.
