First off, my applogies for yet another Minimus 7 thread. And my thanks to Zilch and everyone who have put so much time into fine tuning these models.
But I have to "push" my experience with the original model of this speaker. First off, I'm almost positive I bought them in Nov/Dec of 1977, although the literature says they were introduced in 1978. There is a slight chance I actually bought them in Jan 1978.
Secondly, these are the ones with the screw terminals, not spring clips, for attaching the speaker wires. They're model 40-2030; the later models are 40-2030A, 40-2030B, and 40-2030C. Then of course the white models, the wood models, and the 77 models.
Thirdly, I was stunned by their performance in the store and bought a set that day. (I mistakenly thought I was listening to the 3-foot tall speakers they were setting on!) So, around 1985 I thought I'd treat myself to a new second set . . . Garbage! I don't know now if they were the A or B or C models, but I spent a few hours swapping them with my 8-year old set and was completely disappointed. I returned them to the store. My old set, beat up though it was, sounded WAY better then the new ones did!
And not to beat that horse too much, but this wasn't a subjective thing. The older model had a good bottom end; the brand new speakers had no bottom end at all. It wasn't a subtle thing.
I since have purchased another oringal set on the Bay; also a set of the B models; also a set of the 77s. The photos below are of my original 31-year old units. Yes, they have been rained on!
The grill itself if VERY soft metal, much less robust than the later models. Picking it up, gripping it with your thumb on the grill always pushes the grill right into the tweeter dome . . . at least they fixed that with later models.
The damping material is minimal (minimus?) but so be it.
