Aaron (inspiribomb) made a trek to madison for ...some... reason, and picked these up for me on the way down there. I have never heard of them before, but M Jarve was kind enough to send this link...

As you can see, they are transmission line speakers. I doubt they were sold in the U.S. as they carry the Victor name. The aluminum trim around the woofer and tweeter are part of the baskets, and are over 1/4" thick. The cabinets have NO resonance to them, and everything is of great quality. They are mirror imaged, and have a nice cloth surround on the woofer. Very unassuming....till you look closely.

So far, they sound pretty nice, I have it hooked up to my JVC A-X9, and it seems like a great match. The amp has great control over the woofers, and the crisp top end of the Super-A circuitry really opens up these speakers. The transmission line is a thing of beauty, and yes...they kicking hard at 35Hz, and can still make some noise near 30.

Does anybody else have experience with these monsters?

Now its time to look for the FB-7, bigger woofer, horn loaded tweeter...mmmmm

Looks like another Japanese market speaker that a US serviceman stationed in Asia brought home with him, or they may have possibly been offered in Canada? The cabinet design reminds me of some vintage JBL models I've read about, or maybe they were inspired by Lowther? Could these be the perfect bottom end for an AK Econowave sytem? Hmmm......
 
Absolon, I think you are right, its a back-loaded horn. For some reason I kept thinking transmission line when Giuseppe and I were talking about them.

Nevertheless, they sounded pretty darn nice in my small kitchen, placed 2.5 feet apart. I am looking forward to hearing them set up properly over at G's place. The silver finish, although odd, looks good with the JVC gear.

Looks like a back-loaded horn to me given the expansion contour.

Very nice speakers there! A shame not more of those were sold in the West - it seems JVC, Sony and the like could make some great stuff when they wanted to.

What's the high end like with those paper cones? I'd imagine a good efficient soft dome would improve these.

By the way, If you even mention your new Victor speakers and ewave in the same sentence around me, you will never be welcome in my home again. You can sit on the deck though.

Yeah, i wont hack these puppies up. Paper tweeters dont automatically make them crap. If you can really hear above 22k, then you're one of the few, or not old enough yet! Yes I do love the ribbon loaded infinitys, but these are fine 99% of the time.

RE: Horn loaded....i never knew there was a back loaded horn type. :scratch2: I guess that makes sense reading the babelfish translation. Constant Width horn....C.W. Horn written right on the front.

And from the same site...

Victor/JVC really made some awesome stuff, if you know where to look. I imagine your A-X9 can stay fully in its class A range and get quite loud enough with those.

The only change, (and I mean only) that I would try with them would be one of JVC's own planar tweeters, like the HSW1199. Incidentally, I have a pair out of the zero9's you could borrow if you like.

if I can get them to stay in there with no modifications to the cabinet, its worth a shot. But yeah, they are comfortably loud at the first gradient in the JVC's massive volume knob.

They made a lot of great stuff...and it gets overlooked because of the weird styling. They had being incredibly distinctive down to an art form...nothing else looks like a JVC in that 1973-1983 era.

That' an interesting system. Hope they sound as good as they look. Max power of 50 watts peak, sounds like candidates for some tube gear, maybe SET or a good 6bq5 based amp.
