KLH 317 related to KLH model 17 ?

As I pointed out in another thread, the Model 17 came in two different flavors. The older version was veneered and looked like this:

They had date stamps right on the baffle, saying 1969. However, a couple of years later, I bought a vinyl covered pair that looked like this:

No date stamp on the newer ones, but the name plate clearly reads KLH Model Seventeen - spelled out like that. Other than that, they look identical. Same dark woofer and baffle. Same teeny tweeter, except mine is packed with foam on top. Same terminals and switch. Looks to me like just a later variation on a theme.

Same electrically? Not sure. Mine are 8 ohms impedance. Very simple crossover. I'd say it's likely.

Thanks. They remind me of 120% versions of my EPI 100Vs, which have the same basic methodology, meaning simple 2 way design, accoustic suspension, minimal X-over. When I get my EPIs refoamed and recapped, I'll check them against these KLHs. These speakers are really good for their size. I know what I'll chime in with when someone wants a recommendation for small bookshelf speaker. They are somehwat better than :

ADS Model 800s
Electrovoice EV-Sevens
Ohm Model E's
Altec Lansing Model L-100s
Model 1500s Infinity's
Yamaha NS 670s

Happy to help! My original 17's got the E'Wave treatment. Details HERE . The newer ones are enough better that I've kept them stock in my home office. I had never heard of the 317, but it looks like just another refinement. Enjoy.

Thanks for the link and nice work.

Man, you gotta love a wife that does this! :thmbsp:

Yes, she is a real audiophile. On that same trip she waited for a couple of hours for a guy who was fiddling with a Pioneer QX 949A to decide if he wanted it or not. He bought it at a reduction in price, since one speaker output (of the four) didn't sound as good as the others he had tested. She said to me that night, man, I would just bought it on the spot and fiddled with it at the house, for $30.00! It was beautiful, and all the lights were working and that little scope thing was just moving all over the place.
