AR2ax wave guide conversion

I started this project late last year after determining the stock ARs did not fit my needs. After a trip to Zilch Lab in nearby Berkley, I had it in my head to try the wave guide/compression driver conversion. I ordered all the parts per the detailed parts list, and sold off the original drivers to defer some cost.

I have not had a chance to really compare them yet, but from my initial impression they are nice. I put one up with an ADS L880 using mono and switched back and forth between the two. The bass is similar to the ADS-both being 10 inch and acoustic suspension. The mids and highs have a lot of detail and can be trimmed easily to match the bass. And as Zilch promised, "They will get loud." I hope to return to Zilch Labs soon to have them measured. I am very happy with the outcome and will likely keep the experimenting process going. A big thanks to Zilch and others on the Econo Waveguide speaker thread.

Yes, very nice for sure. I've got the EconoWave drivers and waveguides sitting on the shelf waiting to be put into something. Your pictures inspire me.
 
Setting the E'Waveguide (and grille) forward like this provides clearance for the woofer surround, and possibly improved time-alignment, as well. JBL did similar in 4430 and 4425.

I've never worked with ADS woofers, and look forward to measuring them.

Not to worry. The AR drivers went to someone that will use them to resurrect an ailing pair of original ARs.

It will be interesting to see how people react to hearing these speakers with the grills on and then removing them to show the modification.:music:

Again, thanks to all the AKers that did the testing and research to make this modification so simple.

I may wind up being #42.

Got a pair of 3 1/2 foot tall, 2 foot wide, 18 inch deep cabinets to rebuild here for a client... will have a custom-reconed EV 15B (using curvilinear cone and felt dustcap), the Pyle PH612 E-wave horn and a Selenium D210Ti driver. I will definitely be using the high-efficiency version of the E-wave crossover (the EV woofer is like 97-98 dB sensitivity), and possibly a supertweeter...

Sounds like that'll work, Gordon, but #s 42 and 43 were also completed by others yesterday.

Looking forward to seeing how they perform for you; we've got plenty more numbers.... ;)

I almost wish I would have used the AR3 instead for their bigger woofers and slightly bigger cabs. I'm guessing the bass on mine are around 40Hz? Eventually I want some speakers that go down a bit lower, say around 30Hz.

I'm using AR3 woofers and cabs. I've tried 2 different sets of AR3 woofers and neither one would perform high enough to mate with the PH612/D210Ti combination. I'm now using a KEF B110 between the two as a midwoofer from about 300 - 2K. I love the AR3 woofer and cab but I haven't been able to get the requisite top end out of it to make a 2-way. They do play down below 30 hz, though.
Another thing about the AR3 cab: the PH612 waveguide is too wide to drop into that baffle. The max space available between the cabinet rims is 11.5" and that's if the WG is raised well above the baffle surface.
It's a shame. I'd like to maybe try something in a 3-way with a smaller WG, midwoofer and AR3 woofer and cab.

Those are AR woofers. I'm looking for a pair of ADS L620's with 10" woofers and if I find a pair I'll bring them out for measurement and see if they are eWave candidates.

I'm resurrecting this old thread in the attempt to employ the design on AR 2As, please provide:
1 a bill of materials for the crossover
2 horn and driver specs

I'm guessing it is a standard ewave crossover. However, there appears to be several parts "missing" from the photos in post # 1. Could it be that these parts are under the board they are mounted on? I can't say for sure but Zilch probably would have left a drawing somewhere if the AR2X mod was simpler than the standard ewave crossover.
