Thanks for the support. I woke up an hour ago thinking about ways to bleed in enough air flow for cooling the motor without starving the cleaning tube for suction. Time to go play in the shop!
 
With 2hp I would think you could bleed off plenty of air without starving the tube, but cooling shouldn't be an issue unless you're going to leave it running for an extended period of time.

Thanks & I kind of expect so to. I want to have plenty of suction since the platter will be spinning at 40 rpm which is way faster than a VPI (16 rpm) but this motor is free so I'll test it before I buy a slower one.

I made good progress today. Rough fit-up is as far as it can go without the VPI parts. Probably won't work on it tomorrow. About a dz. family and friends coming over after church for my 15# Easter brisket and chicken. I'll be up at 4:30 firing up the smoker. Not complaining, wouldn't have it any another way. :banana:

Around here they call it Baltic Birch and yep 9 plys and no voids. Plywood is always an odd number so the internal stress is balanced by an even number of opposing plys on both sides of center. I'm going to join the cabinet using box joints unless I get a wild hair and decide to veneer more than just the top. I'll can do a parts list for you. Being an engineer I usually do scale drawings, cutting and parts lists for my projects. This one I'm just winging it with stuff on hand.

That looks super! Where do you get the VPI tube? That's going to be a sweet machine when you're done.

Thanks. Elusive Disc sells VPI machines and replacement parts. Their prices on vinyl are pretty good too.

I have an "official" VPI (not home brew) that I discovered would overheat the turntable motor after a short time even if it was shut off between records especially during warm weather.

It would shut down without damage (internal thermal switch) and would come back on after about 20 min. of cooling, not good or convenient.:sigh:

I solved this problem by putting an exhaust fan on the back with its own switch and turn on the fan if I am going to do a bunch of records in a row.:yes:

The TT motor housing has only a small oval vent in the bottom for ventilation "stock".

The VPI design segregates the motors from the wet side so you have a whole lot of heat and it sounds like little ventilation. Maybe this is driven by product liability concerns. Should the tank ever leak the electrical is protected. My design has the platter motor in the exhaust flow so I'm hoping it won't over heat.

FWIW, I am using a bread maker motor for mine.

Does it reverse? I seem to rember our bread machine from way back when reversed. Will you be taking advantage of reversing rotation? Even if not that probably better than a ice cream maker motor. Plenty of torque and less rpm.
