On the recommendation of theophile (thank you!) I bought a Yamaha GT-2000 through HiFiDo. It's a 100V unit so I've got it hooked up to a nice quality Japanese manufactured step-down transformer.

I've actually had the GT-2000 for a while, but I've been looking for a phono stage that is suitable for the Zyx Airy 3 cartridge that I got to use with the table. I finally found what I was looking for: a used Krell KPE reference phono stage with external power supply that I got on Audiogon.

The phono stage arrived yesterday and I set everything up in my test system. Cartridge alignment was done using a Turntable Basics alignment tool which incorporates a Baerwald alignment protractor. The tone arm has a VTA adjustment, and getting an initial decent alignment and anti-skate set was very easy. I'll spend some time over the next week or so listening to it and tweaking the alignment.

This rig sounds great right off the bat. The Krell is so much quieter than other phono stages that I've used. The Zyx sounds terrific. The low end is excellent, mid range and female vocals are stunningly lifelike. Sss's are clearly heard with no added sibilance. I love it!

Congratulations! I know that Munetika at HiFiDo has a waiting list for GT-2000s. Perhaps a few are tagged for overseas customers.
Certainly a high-end cart there- no doubt it will bring out everything the machine is capable of. I see you have the auto arm-lift- very handy.
Last week I bought a GT-2000, the 'L' version, for the sole reason that it has the auto arm-lift. And the walnut finish is nice.
Any thoughts of straight tonearm or platter mat upgrades? There's a bloke over here machining tonearm bases for SME arms.

My experience with HiFiDo is that you practically need an "in" to be able to buy gear from them. Before theophile put in a good word for me I never received a response when attempting to buy from HiFiDo. I've been dealing exclusively with Munetika for the last 6 months and he's a real good guy. He is a vintage audio enthusiast, and Axel cites him as reference on Sony gear on The Vintage Knob. When I mentioned that to Munetika he was quite tickled, and surprised that I knew about TVK.

I never had any problems buying from Hifido, and never bought anything there before I got my speakers but always got replies to my inquiries.

How did you find the packing? Most stellar job I've ever seen in my life...

Thanks Stoffie. As good looking as it is, the GT-2000 sounds even better. I've been looking for an HX-10000, but haven't ever seen one for sale.

I agree - HiFiDo's packing is first rate.
 
If I ever happen to find one, you'll be the first to know. (there was one some years ago on Hifido, you should ask your contact to look out for one!)

Did you call them, or use e-mail? I've sent them four e-mails on a turntable I wanted to buy, and never gotten a response.

OT, are you using an Epsilon crossover on those Gammas?

There is room for tweeking with the GT 2000.
Naturally the stock unit is no slouch(That doesn't cover it.It sounds f***ing awesome as stock).My foray into tweeking the '2000 has been along the same lines as the PX-2 I was using previously:

I had used the SAP Relaxa 3+ magnetic-levitation stand(to good effect)under the PX-2.With the '2000 I had to try-out the Clearaudio Magix(8 of 'em).I feel that despite the rated load carrying capability of the Magix,the real number of them necessary is greater than the rating.
Given the results I am getting with the Magix,I would speculate that top-shelf isolation plaTforms like the Vibraplane,Minus-K,Halcyon and possibly the HRS would all bring benefits worthy of their extra cost.
I have also(as I did with the PX-2)substituted the stock mat with a Boston Audio carbon/graphite mat.In the case of the GT 2000 I use the Boston Audio Mat 2.There are cork/foam 'spots' between the BA Mat 2 and the platter.
As I see that Mark is using an aftermarket headshell(a very good choice.The carbon-fiber Oyaide).I'm using an Orsonic AV-1b.
A HRS 'Analog Disk' weight is the other tweek.

The best decision I've ever made. :yes:

I'm not saying that these are 'The Definitive' tweeks for the GT 2000.It's just an indication of things that I have found to be additionally beneficial.
 
I've never heard my vinyl sound so amazing. I'm listening to a Tamla recording of Marvin Gaye's "Whats Going On". The bass guitar and piano intro to "Mercy Mercy Me" is visceral. The detail I'm hearing is a revelation. I know the Zyx cart and the Krell phono stage are playing a part in this too. What a joy to listen to.

Very Nice paick-up Mark! Man those are some very,very nice tables and hard to find. Glad you managed to get one to go with all that other amazing Yamaha gear you have amassed. Hope you enjoy it immensely!

What are you using for a step-down transformer? I have acouple pieces of 100V gear and would really like to use something better than the cheapie transformer I purchased from Audiocubes with my little Kenny integrated

(sorry for taking the thread down a tangent)
 
Nice score Mark. I've seen you and Theo talk about the GT-2000 in the past and I'd love to get my hands on one, preferrably the L model. So it this TT the pinacle of direct drive TT's?

Spectrum, is this the one you purchased?
 
Do all the GT-2000's have an input for 24V? Does this mean you can use an outboard power supply and can omit the 100V to 120V converter? That would be sweet it that's what's going on here.

Duffinator, yes sir, that be the model. And yes, the YOP-1 is an optional, external power supply on the '2000 models. If you could configure a 120v to 24v converter, you'd be set like a jelly.
There is quite a GT-2000 fan base here in Japan with an assortment of parts being available. For example: lower models GT-750 and GT-1000, GT-2000 TT bases (plinths), acrylic covers, tonearm weights and bases and even 'copies' of the YOP-1. These are common on an auction site. An option could be to arrange a middle man to negotiate between auction seller, shipping and yourself.
I can't understand HiFiDo's communication policy- maybe they are saturated with pre/orders? No problem with buying an amp through them from this end.
Mark, hope this info doesn't detract from the beauty of your thread.

I'm certain that one could get one of those outboard power-supplies made to suit the local Mains voltage.

I've read on Japanese blogs opinion that they make no difference,also that it is a great improvement.So,there is still contradiction as to the necessity.However,I was told by an Audio Asylum member who has a GT 2000,that the external supply(YOP-1)makes a worthwhile improvement in the sound quality. :scratch2:
