Well, at least I believe it's fairly obscure and it will be part of my new audio listening room when completed early next year.

It is a 150 watt/ch Sansi ECA-3 Electronic crossover unit.

That's the general description of it, but I think it can be described as an electronic crossover with a 4 - channel stereo power amplifier that allows you to bi-amp your speakers.

The unit is NIB having been only used once, according to the seller. It is complete; original box, plastic wrap, foam, manuals, that wonderful Sansui plastic-covered "hook-up" sheet and whatever else the unit came with.

I'm eagerly awaiting the UPS guy (God, I have my fingers crossed :D ) and will post pictures when it arrives.

If any of the Sansui-knowledgable people here in AK have any knowledge of this unit I'd love to hear from you.

I pulled out my operating instructions for my old Sansui 2000A. There is a section in it "Electronic Crossover System". " The independent pre- and power=amplifier sections make the 2000A more versital. One of their most exciting uses is for E C S...." The diagram on the next page shows the power amplifier inputs for low range connected to the Electronic Crossover Unit as well as the pre-amp outputs. Additional connections from the ECU go to a Power Amp for high range and a Power Amp for midrange. They don't identify the ECU by part number. If the one you have is what they are talking about, it looks like you'll need the additional amps (high and mid). The Woofers are fed out of the receiver speaker outputs.

That's how the owner intrepreted the specs; I was skeptical as well but I think you've cleared that up.

More likely a total of 150 watts music power all channels driven, yes?

I think I'm going to like what it offers. Since it has 4-channels of power amps, though, that pretty well means it doesn't need additional power amps - for which I'm very grateful :D .

Thanks for posting that info. I'm not disappointed - in fact I usually coinsider 30-50 watts plenty unless you're driving those ulta-innefficient specialty speakers.

I can hardly wait for the UPS guy to arrive.

Sansui ECA-3 arrives safely!

The Sansui ECA-3 Electronic Crossover Amplifier/4-Channel Stereo Power Amplifer (brochure description!) has arrived safely via UPS (no kidding). Double boxed it was inside it's original box with a foam clam-shell container inside that. It came with all the manuals and an original sales brochure which explains what this 'new' surround sound is all about :D . It was marketed to hook up to a 4-speaker set of Sansui tri-ampable speakers (yes, that's 3 amps), the SP-2002 front speakers and the SP-1001 back speakers.

I am surprised that I didn't realize from the modest description that I was given when I purchased it that it's BOTH an electronic crossover and a 4-channel power amp!

Modestly described in the spec sheet as 90W music power into 4 ohms (front channels) and 60W into 4 ohms (back channels) it has a staggering frequency response of 15 Hz to 70,000 Hz +- 1 dB. Hum and noise are -80 dB. The response curve is continuously variable in three bands; 15-500 Hz, 500-4000Hz and 4000-70,000 Hz (the dogs will love that).

Of note is the ability to tri-amp the speakers and Sansui do this by driving the bass from the receiver/amplifer and the mid and high from the ECA-3. Neat arrangement.

I haven't plugged it in yet and I haven't popped the hood but I will and there will be pictures to follow.

If anyone is interested in high-res scans of the documentation just PM me and I'll make copies available.
