My new speaker build

Title: Untitled compact speaker project.

We bought the wood on Sunday, and spent the afternoon rough cutting and gluing up the layers. Not MDF this time, but rather some premium plywood. Each panel is 1-inch thick and made up of 17-plies.

The joints are still going to be the finger joints like in the zero9 and Maggie sub.

Driver complement consists of two 6.5-inch woofers and a 1-inch soft-dome tweeter. Each cabinet will be ~40-liters in volume and tuned for 40Hz (ported).

I do not understand why you are gluing those plywood boards like that, its going to be awful hard to cut now...
 
The drivers that are going in are a 6.5-inch Klipsch woofer (paper cone), a 6.5-inch Radio Shack poly-cone woofer, and a 1-inch Radio Shack soft dome tweeter.

The TRS drivers are actually from this speaker: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2036284

and the Klipsch woofer is from their ProMedia 400.2 subwoofer.

The TRS and Klipsch drivers have different resonant frequencies (~50Hz and ~38Hz, respectively), and they will have different upper crossover points, essentially making the speakers a 2-1/2 way system.

Now, before people poo-poo the driver selection, I just want to point out that the idea was to use drivers I had on hand, and to do this a cheaply as possible while still offering as good performance as possible. There will be ample opportunity to "spruce them up" if needed later on.

I had a schematic of the cabinets and driver layouts, but I think I might have left them in the Rover. I'll post a pic as soon as I find it.
 
I know better than to doubt you Mike. Should be fun to watch the progress. Take lots of pictures please.

Well, the build proper has been put on hold until I can deal with something of an emergency. No, I didn't do the 20,000-watt jig, but my (tied for) most favorite speakers, the IMF Studio TLS-50's have suffered a mortal blow.

The drivers are fine- the front baffle is what gave-up the ghost. If I told you how it actually happened, you would not believe me. I wouldn't have believed me if I hadn't been there, but suffice it to say that one of them needs a new baffle, so their both getting it.

They too are being built of 1-inch thick plywood (vs. the original 3/4" particle board). So, here are some picks of that diversion. Because Bob will not be around this weekend or next week, the best we can hope for is that the IMF baffles will be complete before Saturday.

So, in the meantime, here are some pics of the general untitled compact speaker project baffle layout (with actual drivers) and the IMF emergency baffledectomy diversion. Have fun speculating how the baffle broke- a prize to the person who guesses it.

Greetings Mike from a fellow trader south of you...looks like a fun project! I hope you are cutting all that glued plywood with lasers!! :) Sorry to hear your baffles let you down.
 
I really like the way the foam twists in the cab. I think I will try that on my next build.

We always like a good story, so.....how did you bust up the baffle board?
 
Dang Mike, that part of the country seems to be a little hard on speakers for some reason. The foam damping in the IMF sure is interesting. I have never seen the inside of one of those until now.

Still not exactly following the big glue up for the first one, but both of these projects are going to be interesting to watch :thmbsp:

WOW! Neat (little) project you got there. Thats a lot of plywod, should be a very cool speaker when you`re done. Awaiting more pics. +1 on the twisted foam in the cab very unique application.
 
The gluing is a consequence of Menards not having 1-inch thick plywood, so as usual, we took multiple sheets and glued them together to attain the desired thickness. We cut the large 4x8 panels down to size (rough cut), then glued the sheets together, clamping and weighing them down. As has been demonstrated (to my satisfaction) in the past, the glue should also act as an additional strengthening and stabilization layer.


As for the IMF's, some who attended Ron's get together may remember a certain CD... A certain CD with a rather spectacular drum piece on it. I knew no good would come of it, and without realizing it, I was right. There was a grand cacophony, a very out of place *snap* and a continuing slight *rattle*, followed by a peculiar air disturbance coming from a place it should not- I saw the crack. Within minutes, I called up Boy Wonder, asking how very creative he was feeling. :o

Ok, I'm following you now. I was thinking you were gluing it up as one big monolithic block :D Your right, 1" premium hardwood faced plywood is a something you are not going to find at your local DIY center.


Son of a gun, I must have missed the fireworks. No matter though. I would rather be dealing with a replacement baffle than finding replacement drivers.

I was also picturing all the layers glued up as one large block, not just a couple sheets together.. but seeing them as one thick chunk of wood sure made me think of a few ideas...

As far as the broke baffle, I was seeing a drunk head first into it... not near as exciting as seeing music breaking the baffle, althought it would have at least been funnier...
