Over the weekend at the Dwell on Design show in Los Angeles, Designer Joe Wilkerson displayed his newest furniture creation, the M21 Flat Panel. The name might not be that telling, but this beauty is a mid-century themed console that houses a 42" plasma screen. Apparently this updated retro-console was attracting a lot of attention at the show. And why not, the M21 Flat Panel combines the oh so trendy mid-century modern design with 21st century tech.

Aside from housing the plasma screen, the walnut hardwood console even incorporates room for a built-in center speaker. Made from "Fender amp screen material," the front facing speaker grill is in a perfect location to complete the surround-sound speaker layout.

Cool idea! I just hope it doesn't lead into a rash of people gutting GENUINE old TVs to install flat-panel TV screens! :nono:

If you are into DIY construction, there are many, many possible "retro" designs that could accomodate a flat-screen television, that would fit better into most non-modern room interiors than the typical panel sold these days. I'm almost surprised no one came out with this before now; flat screens have been around long enough, by now.
 
I've seen that one before, pretty cool but it looks a bit unstable because it's so thin, also is there any ventilation? Plasmas run hot!

As long as the lowest part of the cabinet is weighted (and I hope they had the good sense to do so), it won't go anywhere. Flat-panel displays aren't that heavy. Most of the weight in my 47" Philips is in the base - rough guess is that it's at around 60% of the total package, if not more. If the cabinet proves to be too much of a heat trap, an LCD or some of the newer stuff coming online now could be swapped in there. A similar unit could also be made with a rear projector.
