Just found a Kyocera R-851

Picked it up yesterday. It seems to work great but haven't tried the tuner yet. Anybody familiar with these who can tell me if it's normal for it to get pretty hot on top at the center rear edge?
Where did the R-851 fall in their line-up? It looks like a well equipped receiver.

Please post pics. There's one listed near me for $15 non-working, I suspect is just missing pre-main jumpers, but not sure. Does yours have the jumpers or a switch?
 
Here's a few picks I just shot. There are no jumpers on this model or a switch. I paid $10 without knowing if it worked or not.

Pop the top and see where it's getting hot. The output transistors' mounting heatsink, which is quite small, remotes the heat via a Freon-filled copper heat pipe to another heatsink, and it's possible that the heat pipe is not working.

I don't recall any of my R-851s getting "hot". Just to be sure, I've got one fired up and playing at a low level but with bass boost on. I'll go back and check it in a half hour or so.

Meanwhile, if possible, if you could scan and post the owner's manual, that would be a great favor to us old Kyocera fans.

Nope, not hot, just comfortably warm, which is how I remembered it.

Do the obvious before panicking-- check for shorts, low-impedance loads, etc etc.

And yes, there are no pre-out/main-in jacks on the 851 (or the 651, for that matter), which is sad, because it's got an exceptionally versatile preamp.
 
aw man....we need some nudies of that thing. What a beast! For $10 wow... a parametric 3-band eq is a extreme rarity on any receiver with which I'm familiar.
 
The heatsink doesn't seem as hot with the cover off so maybe it's fine. Here's some inside shots and some close ups of the front panel. This is one of the nicest looking receivers I own, and I own quite a few. I'lll scan the owners manual tonight and try to get it on soon.

I've got a DA-310CX CD player that I need to work on. It has the same dark champagne & same knobs as that receiver. That receiver looks like it's got some decent "iron" in it.
 
What you don't want to happen is for the heat to stay in the little chunky heat sink. That would indicate a heat pipe failure. The heat should spread out evenly in an overall glow of warmth, not a concentrated hotspot, even with the cover on.

If not, all is not lost. Even with no heat pipe, the little heat sink should work with a computer fan forcing cool air over it. Do what you have to do to avoid MOSFET flambé.

I have done the little computer CPU fan thing on one of my amps that was cutting out......now it runs all day and keeps very cool......
 
I know you posted this years ago, but thank-you! I just acquired an R-861 and it's nice to have an operator's manual.
Wish I could find one for my Kyocera CA-710CX CD player. :thmbsp:
 
Is the A/B configuration on this amp designed to run A or B or could you run both A and B at the same time. I've been running this receiver for about a month now on a par of Altec 891a and loving it!
