Jvc r-x400 receiver, display out ?

anyone know anything about the front panel displays on these things. i don't know if it's LCD, florescent, LED, ?
receiver worked fine last time i used it (~2 years ago?) except for the display.
is there a cheap easy fix?

there is a battery compartment on the back panel. what is that for-tuner memory?

thanks!

Display out could be the supply voltage, or if it's a VFD (vacuum fluorescent display) it could be worn out.
Battlery is for memory presets.

Chances are VERY good that the fuse lamp behind the display is burned out. I have this receiver, and this is what happened to mine (also to an R-X300 I owned briefly). MAKE SURE you get the EXACT same rated replacement. When I replaced mine, it was a slightly different milli-amp rating, and that thing got HOT! Could have damaged the board the bulb was clipped to.

The bulb may be behind some tin reflective shields that must be removed to get to it, can't remember exactly. But if you open it up it should become obvious. It's not a difficult fix.

thanks for responses guys. i'm just remembering that the display failed in 2 or 3 sections, each spaced a few days or a week after the first. iirc, first was the spectrum display, then the next 2, a few days apart.
don't know if that helps or tells you anything. ?

i should say, i'm only a layman with zero experience fixing these things. i may just use it as is, give it away, or ?

You can do this. No soldering! I pulled the cover off my '400 (6 screws, 2 each side, 2 in back) and took a photo, which I've attached. Of course you can't see the lamps in this photo because they're on the other side of the board.

There are 9 metal tabs that keep the lamp board attached to the tin reflective housings. There are 4 tabs on the R end, 3 in the middle, and 2 on the L (as seen from the back - some are obscured in the pic by cables). These must all be bent straight out so the board can be slipped off. It will still be attached by a power cable, so you won't actually be removing it from the receiver. You will see 3 fuse lamps. Replace them, and then replace the board as it was. This should do it.

It's difficult the use the receiver if the screens are dark, so I encourage you to go for the fix. Not sure where you can get the lamps, but again MAKE SURE they have the exact ratings of the ones you remove. The wrong ratings raise heck with the diodes on the lamp board.

Jvc receiver now back in use after 2 years 'dormancy'.

using R-X400 to replace one of the 2 pio qa800as (see slideshow below) that are getting de-hissed.
both went in for de-hissing/de-crackling today.

one is hissy/crackly in left front channel, other is same in right front channel.
they both still work well but for above issues. been using them right along.
scott f, of audio fixation, will have them back in form in no time.

met him this afternoon at local gas station and transferred amps to his vehicle.

r-x400 worked right off and sounds very nice!

edit-display not yet fixed. very low priority.

Thanks for this thread, guys!

I use a R-X500 on the computer for needledrops. The part of the display that shows the volume bars and sources blacked out about a year ago. I was sure that this was some obscure fluorescent screen and didn't want to mess with it. I can still read it with a flashlight. Now I think I'll try new bulbs.

AK is great!

i fixed one the other day for my sister-in-law. the fuselamps were OK, but the light array was not getting any power from the main board. so........ i unplugged the connector from the main board, found a wall-wart of the correct rating, plugged it into the outlet on the back of the receiver, and ran the wires in through the back panel. then i crimped the wires from the wall-wart to the pigtail from the light array. voila! lights for the front panel!

Kamakiriad! What a great record.

He means that the display lamps for some reason (apparently he does not have access to a schematic) were not getting power, so he powered them externally with a small AC adaptor.

Those displays are reverse-polarized LCDs (light characters, dark background) and are backlit with fuse-style lamps.

I used to find bad solder all over those boards, so you might consider looking for that, especially at connectors. Probably all you need to do is replace those lamps. Getting the assembly apart isn't that big a deal.
