Tangent 400 Score!!

Dropped by the pawn shop today. The usual doof doof and "hot" items lined the wall. To much of dad's and my surprise, he had a pair of Klipsch Tangent 400s wayyy in the back. Hunerd bucks for the pair, and we were out the door. Just got them cleaned up and listening to Rush Exit Stage Left. The only thing is, he had a stack of awia all-in-ones a mile high on top of these.:tears:

12" woofs???...aren't those Heresy IIs in a larger cabinet with a nice bump in bass???...nice...you stole 'em...

After listening to them for a while I can give a bit of review on what I hear.
WOW at the high end on these horns! They aren't overpowering or harsh, but they have a "Thick" presence. Some people would say that they have the Klipsch-lack-of-bass syndrome, but I feel that they have a rather flat response instead. No mid-bass hump, no wonky midrange, no harsh treble. These aren't warm or bassy, but rather sensitive and clear. I'm extremely happy. These will be run with pride!

I was wondering if someone who has the Tangent 400s would be willing to take some measurements of the cabinet and ports for me. I would like to build a pair of those.

I have a pair of KG 5.5's, One horn, 2-10" woofers. These are some of the best over all speakers I have heard, with the right amplification (150 wpc minimum to do them justice).
They have no lack of bass, as I can knock the dust of the ceiling at high volumes, and a picture off the wall occasionally.:thmbsp: Very accurate speakers for all types of music.
I would experiment with amplification if you get the chance. A good 150wpx+ amp made my 5.5's turn into a almost totally different speaker, moving them from very good, into the excellent+ range.
I know they are all very efficient, and supposed to play loudly with a few watts, but believe me, they need good power to sound their best.
I paid $399 ea new in '94, so you did good.
I think the lack of deep bass is akin to the Heresy, and the early Lascalla's, but I think Klipsch more of less addressed the issue on the later versions.

BOB wants to build Tangents??? :scratch2: They look a lot like Chorus...I wonder how similar they are?
 
Here you go!

The cabinet is 35 in tall on a 1/2 inch base. They are 13 5/8 inches deep, and 15 inches wide (measured from the straight wood on the back, instead of across the grill cloth).

The woofer is 14 1/2 inches up from the bottom of the base. The mid horn is 10 1/4 inches by 4 3/8 inches. The tweeter is 5 7/8 by 31 1/2.

The ports are 9 1/2 inches up from the base. They are 5 inches deep with a 3 inch diamater. The wood is 3/4 inches thick.

Any pictures you can make would be good. It is my understanding that all the parts are standard Heresy II. That would be a K-24 woof, K-76 tweet and K-53 midrange with a Heresy II crossover. If you are looking at the innards, I would be interested in knowing if there is any damping material or any shelf or other types of internal braces that make it something other than just a rectangular box.

There is not (as far as I can find on the net) a full description of this speaker. This might be the thread that can really document the Tangent 400 speaker. It is my understanding that the Tangent 400 can be described as a Heresy II with bass. It is supposed to be able to go well down into the 30s with bass compared to the Hersey II only making it down to the 50s or 60s.

What Model Klipsch?

Thats my thread,in another post,you can see pic's of x-over there . It is a Hersey 11,crossover. Help with how to fix binding post? Thanks!!
 
I've had these 500's for about 17 years. I bought them new at the navy exchange in Rota Spain. The tangent line takes alot of bashing from the Klipsch crowd, but I have always liked the way these big boys sound. I have bought and sold many a speaker since, and these are still here.
