I can break any motor.
Picked these up on CL from a local guy looking to get rid of them. Nice guy, I lucked out, he wasn't charging for them, just wanted someone to pick them up. These made a nice upgrade to my HT setup as my Left and Right channels, as most of the content we watch is in stereo.

Hooked them up. Definitely sounds better. Here they are when I first got them home:

Hit the rubber strip that seals the back with back to black. I thought it would be dried out, but it wasn't too bad. The B2B helped a good bit. Will have to re-seal them at some point. After cleaning them, some old english to the wood to revive the finish, and some resolve to remove some minor fabric stains....

They sound pretty good. I'm thinking of replacing the cross over, any suggestions/tips on what to use?

Nice speakers
I recaped my Utahs about 6 months ago. 3-ways like yours.
Mine had 2 caps per box. I can only see one small cap in your pictures. I like mine except that I'd like the bass to go a bit lower.
Love the cabinets. all you need are a couple of badges for the front. I need one
 
I have a pair of A-70A (I think) Utahs sitting around here. I'm amazed at how great they sound considering the dinky size of the magnets.
 
That's a nice find. Your pick-up has made me take a look at a pair of Utah speakers that I got as a throw-in when I bought a tube amp about a year ago. The original owner had poured gobs of stain over them to cover up scratches. I sanded them down tonight and put on a coat of Tung Oil. I will finish them up over the next few days. The crossovers can be recapped with Dayton caps for about $10 plus shipping from PE. I think I may order the caps later this week as well.


 
Wow! Now you got me thinking I should be sanding my down and refinishing them.
 
Their appearance is similar to the His Master's Voice speakers my grandfather use to have in his possession.
 
Are these utahs really that decent? There is a pair near me for the price of a fancy hamburger that I keep telling myself not to pick up. They look similar to these, but have black grille cloth and I can't remember the model number, but I think it said HS-25? They have a black knob on the back and 12" woofer. Heavy walnut cabs. :sigh: looks like I might have to go get them...
 
definitely decent for what you can get them for, although free is the best yet. I recently picked up some HS5-a's from the Salvation Army.

I had posted these pics for help identifying what I wasn't sure was a cap or resistor (thanks for solving the mystery avionic!)

I figured for 14.99, if nothing else, I could use the solid veneered cabinets for another project. When I listened to them I was surprised they sounded as good as they did, I wasn't expecting much of anything. Now I am inspired to refinish them replace the caps and resistors, add some more modern dampening material.

Sorry BobHol, I have to admit I scored a pair of badges on a free auction site called wensy.com from a seller named stereos. He seems to sell a lot of speakers and speaker parts. Maybe if you contact him he can help find you the badge you need.

Rygen, I think your cleaned up cabinets are looking pretty nice (much better than mine) I would say you could leave them as is.

Glad to see all of the Utah's being preserved for the future! :smoke:
 
Yes pretty cool, they have horn tweeters, I'm guessing these might have slightly better highs than some of the earlier models, although I haven't heard another pair.

You should go for them :thmbsp:

I remember reading somewhere that positioning can be critical to maximize the high frequencies. I wonder if they were meant to sit horizontally, as the badges are mounted that direction and I'm thinking the way the horns flare would give you wider vertical dispersion??
 
I think utah is a very much under-rated speaker. And some of their larger woofers can give altec a run for their money.

I checked parts express and I can't find any in 8 or 4 at this voltage. Any suggestions on what would work with these?
 
So from what I'm hearing, maybe I shouldn't be thinking twice about picking up the Utah A-100s at the little local junk shop? They want $40 for the pair which seemed a little high to me. I know they have a 12" woofer, probably cloth surround allthough I couldn't get the front off. They're three-ways too.
 
you can substitute a larger voltage cap. if you can't find the correct capacitance, you can sub two 4 mfd caps in parallel to get 8 mfd.

mr wetland, i'm a big utah fan. i must admit that tweeters are not their area of expertise, acceptable but not exemplary. their woofers are wonderful.
