JBL 4507 Cabinets

After researching and hearing so many positive comments about the 4507 cabs I decided to find a pair, well I did and hear they are. I was told they were installed in a church and someone tried installing grills to the front edges causing a considerable amount of damage to the front edges. The corners also has some damage this could have been caused in shipping. I think they have potential and can be saved, gives me another project to work on.

Today I got to spend a couple hours on the cabs and removed all the damaged edges. I'm starting to feel better about them already. I think I'll prepare some 1x1/2 Oak strips to replace the edges I removed. I'm wondering if these cabs will benefit from some additional stiffening on the inside anyone with 4507's your input will be appreciated.

Good job!
I don't think you'll see a real need for additional bracing. But I myself would probably do it simply because it won't hurt.
I don't have any personal experience with the original 4507 though. Only with my 3/4" MDF remake of it. I have way more bracing in mine than the original does.

Testwork - Thanks, I don't think it will hurt to add a couple 1x2 pieces diagonally across the sides. I was also looking at the way they were braced on the inside side to side and front to back looks pretty rigid. I might give them a test run before changing anything so I have something to compare.

I might have just filled in the bad spots with wood putty, sanded and paint..?

What driver are you intending to use?

I've got a set just waiting for my attention, too. They were 'flown' much like yours and I've had to fill the holes. My corners are in better shape but the tolex coverings have been scuffed quite a bit on mine, too.

I've been thinking about doing these things:

- Using standard height kick frames from a cabinet shop to use as bases.
- Applying a nice veneer to the sides, front edges and inner edge faces to prepare them for use in a living room.
- Biamp them with the JBL 2445J/2380 horns or the Altec 291 drivers for the upper end. I'll also use them for the Econo-wave experiments, too.
- Use either 2235s or 2226s for the woofers.

It is turning out to be quite the versatile basic woofer module for sure. Keep us informed on your journey.

Too many bad spots to fill in, this material starts breaking up it's hard to reverse it. I have a pair of 2235's for these.

David - Nice plans! this might be a good time to give them some attention plus you might help me to stay on task and complete this project. Some of my projects take a long time. so the motivation will be good. Can I see your cabs?:scratch2:
I'm not sure how I'm going to finish these, I like using that duratex speaker cabinet paint it's easy to apply with a hopper, it dries quick and hard without the fumes. I used it before on my Altec 9849 cabs.
I will be biamping these with a pair of Altec 604-8H. Yet to build the cabs.
Added some photos of my 614's in a utility cab grey.

There's a thread, maybe on LH forums, where someone does just that. veneered, and glass ( well, acrylic) top, horn put in open place and boxes turned upside down. Someday.....

Last time I checked, 10.875" 2380 doesn't fit in the available baffle space "above" the woofer, and still needs augmentation for VHF. 2381, same deal, though it will play full range with an appropriate driver. QSC will fit looks like. Confirm please Russell.

Never tried, but it is allegedly possible to strip the vinyl with a hot iron and foil as prep for veneering.... :dunno:

Yep, Zilch, the 2380 just sits on top for now. I'm thinking that I'd build a box for them and veneer it same as the 4507s to match. Those would then sit on top and pivot for placement. This is all just pipe dreams right now as the boxes are 2 states away and I've got my hands full with work and amp restorations. Gotta get better settled.

Today I got some work done on my project, prepared some 1/2" oak strips to replace those damaged edges. After getting those in place I decided to try removing the vinyl covering. I used the iron and foil concept as suggested by Zilch. worked like a champ. Thanks Zilch.

Did the vinyl just shrivel up into a glob as I have seen before?

Do you happen to have a pic of that to illustrate what happens?

The vinyl did shrivel up. I placed a strip of Reynolds on the cab and made a few passes with the iron distributing the heat across the foil. I did a small area at a time (10"X10") too much heat makes it very soft and it breaks. With just enough heat the vinyl stretches and it comes off nicely. Without the foil it will melt the vinyl and just stick to the iron.
Just about ready for a finish couple holes to fill and some sanding.

The JBL logo was painted over in black when I received them, in pulling off the vinyl they resurfaced. I'll find some logos for the grill, I also have to find some JBL woofer clamps.

Dont forget 2225H as well, performs basically like 2226H, plus unlike 2226H, the 2225H can be converted to 2235H via recone. The 2225H is slammin in the 4507, less loww bass than the 2235H.

Sorry missed this post, I'll check when I get home, but I remember putting its face up against the space on the front of the 4507. As I recall, it fit, but not by much and it seems like there is a front to back brace that might be in the way? I'll check it out when I get home.
