The player is in very good condition, the remote is with it....but no wood sides...oh well......

It seems to have a dislike of some cd's.....it sounds as tho the cd is colliding with the drawer.....most cd's even dirty scratched ones it plays perfectly....but a few....ones that play ok in my 1985 Alpine cd player make an awful noise in the Sony....maybe they are a little warped and the motors spindle needs raising a bit......thats all i can think of anyway..i have cleaned the lens.....and it made no difference to the way it plays.....its fine on most, bad on a few.....

Track to track access is lightning fast and its not skipped at all in several hours of play with cd's that are not in good condition, so i dont think the laser is on its way out anytime soon......

I hope i dident pay too much at $50......

Oh well, more pics tomorrow......i am tired now.....

I have an X55ES with a bad laser that I have been meaning to get fixed using a donor from the X33ES. It looks naked without the side panels.

I agree about the side panels.....i wish i had them.....

I am pretty sure that in my case the laser is ok.......i think the spindle height is a bit low causing CD's that have a slight warp to tap against the drawer...

When i put in a cd it likes it spins almost silently and finds the TOC in about 2 seconds, even on scratched cd's and my one CDR.......

But on a few CD's it for all the world sounds like they are bumping against the drawer, or the laser head as they spin........

But like i said i think the laser is ok...........for now......

Updated pics......

I still need to work out how to lift the cd's up a fraction of a mm to stop a few from rubbing against somthing as they spin......

Cogsinister, you mention you also own an Alpine CDP, may I inquire as to which model it is? Is it branded Alpine/Luxman?

Just curious, I'm a fan of old Luxman CDP's.

It is an Alpine AD-7200 there is a Luxman that looks just the same (model number escapes me) the Alpine is 100% built by Toshiba BTW....the same chassis appeared as a Toshiba player with a different front design.....and i think also as an early Kenwood CD player...

Hope that was helpfull to you......

Put one of the cds in that scrapes and turn the power off. Turn the cd by hand and see what scrapes. The suspension may be sagging and the chuck may be scraping on the support. If so, tighten the springs by stretching them a bit.

Thanks Warren, i have done a bit of that and it has improved matters, now all my CD's play fine....well the TOC gets read on the few that would not even get that far and they play OK now.....a bit more tweaking tomorrow and it sould be better still......

What a fine sounding player.........best i, personally have heard........

Thanks for the info!

I don't want to crap your Sony thread off-tangent for too long, but just a a quick comment, I think your Alpine is related to Kenwood DP-850/880, to some Toshiba XR-Z250 or such and also to Luxman D-103/D-404, which I own and also built by Toshiba. Nice vintage machines that have nothing to be ashamed of next to Sony ES'. Take good care of it! (and the Sony too!)

Its my thread, and i say you are welcome to crap on it...... :)

Yes indeed the Alpine is a beautiful player.....its warm laid back sound suits some of my cd's perfectly.......and it is beautifully built......in its way just as good as the ES.....

I bought a CDP-X55ES new in 1990, it was the first serious component I bought and I eneded up buying as many ES componenets as I could after that!

Mine started making a "ringing" sound in the transport a few years later on some discs, and this would affect the playback. Could be the same in yours. I later sold it as is, but it was likely an easy fix. My thoughts was that it was the clamping mechanism wasn't working right.

As to the sides, most "3" "5" and "7" players used the same side (or size compatible) panels from 1990-1994, so if you could find one of those, you may be in luck.

It's not a "ringing" sound it is a pronounced scraping sound as if the cd is hitting something as it revolves.....but it seems to have improved a lot after running for a few hours, and my tweaking.......

As long as the laser seems strong (and it does) then i am happy......

I know this thread is really old, but maybe someone can help me. I have a 55es which I think has the issue above (in fact, it makes a noise only when reading TOC on some disks), and I don't understand what springs need to be streched exactly, and how. I don't see any springs...The transport needs unmounting to see them?
Thanks
