Don't Panic!
I realy wanted to title this thread "DIY Turntable actualy begins, not just waffle" or similar, but ill remain polite.

The first parts came in the mail today

from the left, 7/8th shaft, bushings, ceramic balls, 1" delrin, 3" aluminum stock.

Im going to start work on the bearing housing, and when its done ill figure out the platter. :D

I think i found a plinth in my scrap bin, need to sand blast it.

Man, I like the way you think.
 
I was of course joking about the waffling, i didnt mean to offend anybody but dnewma04, whom i intended to insult as badly as possible. This project will no doubt take forever, my subwoofer is still unfinished.

All of these materials were ordered for the bearing.

Its going to be an inverted bearing, the alu is to make a housing to place the bushings, and support the platter.

The delrin is for the thrust pad in the bearing on which the ceramic ball will spin.

With the remaining alu i plan to make a motor pod, or 2.

The plinth i have in mind is an end bell of a 50hp electric motor, its about 14" in diameter, cast iron and kind of unique looking.
 
With some crazy setup like that, I'd be tempted to drive the motor with an iPod repeating a 60hZ signal.... :)
 
this is still early and mainly to find out if i can make a platter and bearing.

ipod drive is the initial plan, but motors and arms etc will all come later.
