Why is this hobby enjoyed mostly by the male population?

It's not like it's a contact sport where the typicaly larger males would have an advantage or anything like that. Women have the same or better hearing than men. I just don't get why the whole audiophile thing doesn't apeal to more women.

My wife is very understanding of my obsession, she tolerates and even humors me about it. She can appreciate the decent sound of the vintage system and the HT she uses but it still amazes me that without my influence, she'd never have a decent stereo system.:scratch2: There are plenty of women who couldn't live without music in their life. Why don't they want these hi end systems like us.

Any thoughts??

I think women are more oriented to the visual and tactile senses.

My wife is more into color and design.
 
My wife isn't bothered by my love of this hobby, but she has no interest in it herself. She is engulfed in things on TV.

I have met a few women (3) who are interested in music and audio, but don't seem to have an interest as deeply as most on this site.
 
Women hear better but hearing and listening are sometimes two different things, the women I know usually do multiple things at once and just dont see value in simply listening to music.............unless to temporarily keep the peace. Time after time whether it be my mom, my GF or a female friend I will once in a while talk about a song and 99% of the time they never actually know what it says, they just like how it sounds.
 
I've wondered the same thing. My girlfriend thinks I've lost my mind, but she's generally tolerant of the whole thing. She says it sounds really good, but seems somewhat indifferent about it. I've never met a woman who's really into audio, although I know there's a few on AK.
 
I wish I had an answer.

But I have been fortunate enough to know females who, in our peculiar terms, "get it".

That means that emotional connection to a song where they take serious notice.

Why th' difference? I dunno. Perhaps I'd be rich if I knew.

But I have been fortunate that I have found happiness with friends of both sexes that enjoy good food,music, film, books, art and conversation.

Sometimes the quality liquor helps too.

I know a lot of women who are into music and not sound. I know a lot of men who are into sound and not music. I know a few of each who are into both.
 
Fishing rods, reels, rifles, cars, motorcycles, stereo components are just tools.
Most women are not interested in tools!
That includes men that are called by that term.:D
 
It's a guy thing : nobody here brags about their 10w amp. / guys brag about how LOW it goes , or how HIGH it goes : it's competition , it's tools , it's about having a bigger one then the average guy........... It's what we were evolved to do ;)

That's actually a really good point. Women have very little interest in anything mechanical. You'd have to go back about three million years to find out why that is.
 
Actually I think it is because women have evolved (or been nurtured into) being moms first and foremost. To women, things are secondary to people. The material things that are important to women tend to be highly associated with a person important to them... their wedding ring, for example. (I don't have a theory for shoes though....) A woman's point of view might be that the music is great, the rig is the best sounding ever, but it only has importance if it involves a relationship with another person.

That's my theory presented as an overly simplistic sweeping generalization about mars/venus and all that crap. Please don't flame me too badly.
