VPI 16.5 Record Cleaner

Having heard back from several of you who use the VPI 16.5 and think highly of it, I am wondering if anyone would clean a couple of LPs for me as a test (my nearest dealer is actually the VPI factory). If I pay all costs associated with shipping both ways would you be willing to clean a MoFi and a London LP. Both are somewhat noisy and I am wondering just what good cleaning with a "real" record cleaner will achieve. Would like to get some "real world" results before I spring for one. Thanks.

Hi Glenn,

I have the VPI HW-17. I would be happy to clean a few albums for you. I clean with NG, and VPI fluids. Then I rinse with distilled water. I will also put your records in a new inner sleeve at no charge. I have a NG 3.5FI that I will prolly be selling after the 1st of the year. I planned to keep the NG at my apartment and the HW-17 at my Dad's house. But I have been gathering too much stereo gear. Anyway let me know if you want me to clean a few albums for you? The difference in the noise floor is not small when listening to a clean album. A lot of the ticks and pops go away. Email me privately at jpchleapas@verizon.net
 
I don't know where you live but I would check out the local hi-end stereo shops in your area (or whith in a decent driving distance anyway). If any of them sell VPI analog turntables they probably have a VPI record cleaner there to clean and demo LP's for customers trying out turntables, I am sure they would be more than happy to clean a couple of records for you so you can try them out on one of their tables.............. :D
 
I've had two generous offers, which I have responded to. The LPs are packed and ready to go. Will drop off at the P.O. on Monday. Thanks.
 
Will do. One group of two is being cleaned with a VPI 16.5 and the other with a Nitty Gritty cleaner.
 
I would love to throw the Spin Clean into the fray and see how it stacks up against the big buck guys. ANy chance you have yet another LP to clean up? I'd be glad to clean it for you as well.

Consider this... the Spin Clean costs 50 bucks...
 
Sure. PM me with your address and phone number and I'll get out another pair of LPs to send along. I'm sending one MoFi and one standard pressing in order to get a comparison on pressings, as well. See if one cleans up better than the other.
 
This is turning into a pretty cool experiment. Cant wait to hear results.

Couldn't agree more. I'll play everything tonight and tomorrow to make as fresh in my memory as possible.

It would be helpful if each of you that are cleaning the LPs would listen to them prior to and after cleaning and put in your observations, as well. More ears the merrier. Can't have too much info on this.

Record one track on each record and then compare with the same when it comes back...

I will post pics of my cleaning ritual for you all to see. It would be fantastic if the others could as well.

Probably not........we don't do windows or glass for that matter of any kind............ :lmao:
 
OK....David, John and Manny:

Two LPs are on their way to each of you. One is a MoFi with some surface noise and the other is a standard pressing from 20-30 years ago in similar condition. I wipe down my LPs prior to each play with a Discwasher brush that has been wetted lightly along the front edge with a cleaning fluid/distilled water mix diluted to 100:1. Done while on the platter and rotating. Let's see what a good VPI/NG/Spin-Clean cleaning can do for the sound of these LPs. Will be a great comparison. I played all six albums either Sunday or last evening, so will be relatively fresh in my mind (whatever that means).

So that we remain unaffected by one anothers responses, I suggest that we not post our results until we have communicated between the four of us and I have received the LPs back and played all of them. Please write about what you heard "before and after" as soon after the test as possible so is fresh in your mind. Then we can post our individual thoughts at about the same time without having read the other posts.

The world awaits our results with bated (baited?) breathe. Thanks.

I further think that we should not talk about our impressions until after you post yours. That will further avoid any psycho-acoustic tainting of the sample until after you listen.

What a great experiment!

I use a spin clean and have wondered how much better a vacuum system would do.

Looking forward to the results!
