WC-122 wood case

I have both a 2285b and a 2252b. Neither have a wood case. Both take the WC-122. I would like to make cases for both of them - but need some drawings to work from - anyone know of a source? anyone know of a source for the black grill material?

Welcome furnitureguy. The WC-122 is the three piece wood case. The WC-22 is a full sleeve case that the receiver slides into. I've had both and IMO, the WC-22 looks much better on a 2285B. The WC-22 can be had on ebay for around $100.
 
The best source I've found for the black metal grill material is one type of .... 3-tier stationery tray. No kidding! I've picked two of these things from the scrap metal recycling place, each with three strong, stiff trays that can be cut to size, even leaving a bit of one folded edge at the back, if desired. They are long enough and wide enough, too. I've only found one type that is good for this use, but that type is really very good. Strong, well-built stuff that won't bend easily, has plenty of holes (resembles the original) and is pre-painted black. The paint used will take the heat, too.

Unfortunately, I don't know the brand or where to get them, because of where I got mine. I just keep my eyes open when I go by there.

You might be able to find something close from a good hardware store, Home Depot, etc...
 
Thanks SoCal Sam - I did not realize the W-122 was a 3 piece. I agree , to my eye (as a woodworker) the W-22 looks cleaner, and more refined. Both cases would be easy to make but the W-22 would be especially easy - done in an hour or two.
I assume there are no issues with the W-22 fitting?

The WC-22 is a perfect fit. You need to remove the four screws on the top of the metal case so the WC-22 does not snag. (Keep the screws in a safe place!) IIRC, the front feet holes line up fine but the back feet holes do not. You will need to drill new holes in the metal bottom plate but that is easy enough and I have done that several times myself. Once installed, the WC-22 looks totally stock.

Please note, there are several versions of the WC-22. The plywood version was made specifically for the 2285B and does not require new feet holes. The particle board version is the older version that looks nearly identical and will require new rear feet holes.
 
Parts Express sells a metal grate material under the Dayton name that comes in sheets, about 2' x 2' that can be cut to fit applications like this. It is finished nicely (black) and probably is better than a plastic fitting anyway. Dont have the p/n handy, but I bought some 1 or 2 years ago and its not terribly expensive.
 
I had a lot of Marantz with wood cases. I think the silver on silver models (2285B, 2265B) looks best with the WC-122. The silver faced cassette decks also has a similar type of case.

Sometimes non-op 5025B and 5030B decks with the three-piece wood case can be had for cheap on epirate. The cassette case fits perfectly on the 2130 tuner.
 
Interesting that the 122 does not have a screen over the hole in the top of the unit. It is also structurally much weaker because of the thin area above the slots that the top slides into on the side panels. These can break and the what have you got?

If I were going to make a cabinet, it would be the 22 with the holes drilled in the bottom in the correct position for the unit that was going to reside inside or make just the side panels ala Kenwood. These look really nice on the older champagne integrated amps and tuners like the KT-7000/KA-6000 models.
