Two turntables one phono input......

....is there some sort of switching gear I can get for this situation?

I have a Marantz 2240 receiver with all the inputs basically full already,I have a CD deck on the aux,tape inputs 1 & 2 have a cassette deck and reel to reel.
I just acquired a Marantz 6100 turntable and I already have a Thorens TD160 plugged into the single phono input.
I want to used both TTs so what to do now?:saywhat:

1) build a second system :D

2) get another phono preamp and use a line level input.


I would be wary of switching phono level...

Sorry,I'm a bit of newb, so what does all this mean?
I looked at some preamps on eBay,they all have an in and out for just one TT at least the ones that I saw.
I don't think I really need a preamp anyway,I haven't been using one with the Thorens and it sounds great through the 2240 as is.

adding another phono stage and using a line level input would give you some flexibility in terms of your source signal which can be fun...
although i have two phono inputs on my sansui au-719... i run a rega p3 through the on board phono stage and use a line level input fed with a nad pp1 and ariston rd 60..the sansui's phono stage suits the rega bias cartridge while the nad pp1 sings with the at 95e on the ariston..
just a tweakers thought..:scratch2:

btw..a british company called QED also make high quality input expanders

I wouldn't recommend this approach. If you connected the turntables in parallel to one phono input, each cartridge would load the other one down. You might get sound from the system, but it wouldn't be good sound. Go with the switcher or buy another receiver and a pair of speakers to build a second system around your second turntable.
 
For about the price of a source selector switch you could get an ATPEQ3 phono preamp and connect it to your Aux input. Then you can switch between the two turntables with the Marantz instead of on the separate box. One will be on Phono and one will be on Aux. A more elegant solution, IMHO.

OK...here's a crazy idea to free up an input. Could you daisy-chain the tape decks? Receiver Tape 2 Out would go into the reel-to-reel REC. The reel-to-reel PLAY goes to the cassette REC. Cassette PLAY goes to the receiver Tape 2 in. To play the reel-to-reel, the cassette deck would have to be on. To record to cassette, the reel-to-reel would have to be on. All nonsense, maybe?

something like a QED MA20 input expander can double up your each of your auxiliary inputs as well as your phono input if you did want to try an external phono stage on your second turntable.

..(For adding future tape recorders...its very easy to add tape switching units to either your existing tape1 or tape 2 sockets..
..if you really want to push the boat out...you can keep daisy chaining each rec/play tape loop on the switch boxes with another switch box...

qed even did a 3 way tape switching unit which if used on both your tape loops gives you up to 6 recorders with very flexible dubbing in either direction or from your source..)

i have an old aiwa casseiver with just one external tape loop...yet i currently use an equaliser ,2 tape decks and a minidisc recorder on the single tape loop and can dub in any direction... or even have both cassette decks recording from the source at the same time...
likewise i use the qed ma 20 to run both a tuner and line out from a pc into the single aux input...

so the possibilities for expansion are only limited to the amount and type of switch boxes you add...

here's both the 2way and 3 way tape switching unit... other companies make them too
if you plug either of these into tape 1's (rec/play) sockets you can still use both your cassette and reel to reel as normal...and perhaps connect another cassette/reelto reel/minidisc etc if you use the 3 way version

which leaves you the play back (in) and (record out) sockets empty from tape 2... either for another tape..or use the line in socket of tape 2 as an extra aux- in
