I picked up this HK receiver from the auction site for a reasonable
price. Opened it up today and found its really nasty inside.
I've never heard of this particular model and wasn't aware
they used circuit boards this early. I think this unit is from around
late 50's or so. Had a couple of nice tubes inside, a Mullard 12AX7,
Bugle Boy 12AT7 , RCA 6V6GT, among a few others.

I included a few pictures below showing before and after a quick cleaning
with a brush and shop vac. After cleaning I plugged it into my variac,
slowly ran the voltage up, it came up fine and listened to a few AM
stations for a brief period. Will probably replace all of the caps
in there and use this to listen to in my garage. Its a mono unit
but allows attachment of two speakers A+B .

The Sams index says that the TA-10 is covered in folder 364-4 and that there is a revised version in 351-6 (both are 1957) (Revised came first? Hey I just read 'em...)

That's a sweet lookin' unit.
All that copper is not only functional but also looks great (and holds down the corrosion).
 
Harman Kardon still has the owners manuals for all the older models on their
web site. I found the manual for the TA-10 there including the schematic.
The schematic in the manual shows EL84 output tubes , mine
has 6V6GT outputs. I guess the EL84 is the revised version ?

I know there are two different versions of this receiver, one uses
6BQ5's mine uses 6V6GT output tubes. Do you have either of those
SAMS 364-4 or 351-6 ?

i might be wrong but i think its copper plated steel like the old allied kits and so forth. early HK stuff was a bit more low end, hence the cost cutting like the use of circuit boards. their stuff actually improved with time.
 
Most of the Harmon Kardon audio equipment was middle to low end, with the exception of the Citation line, which was designed to be the best of the best.

Yeah, I agree its copper plated steel, because solid copper would probably
be too soft and would bend easily.

I'm not a big fan of the circuit boards and didn't realize they were used
way back in 1956. The price was right, it works, has a cool retro look,
and gives me something to listen to in my garage.
 
this may sound nutty but if you have an oven with a real good thermostat, id set it at about 120deg and pop that unit in without its knobs. let it bake for a good 10hrs or so. depending how it was stored, those old boards can soak up moisture and make things act weird.
