"Shigaclone" CD transport

I just bit the bullet on building this Shigaraki transport clone, called Shigaclone. It is a JVC RC EZ-31 boombox, ripped apart and rewired. It just happens to have the same transport mechanism and similar circuit as the 47 Labs Shigaraki (4716). Coincidentally, actually this is just weird, I got the boombox on eBay for $47.16 shipped.

Still have to find a DAC though!

I've considered that one also, but I'm really stuck on trying the Phillips chips (TDA154x). I'm really indecisive.

Those are very cool. I've thought about building one, but it seems way over my head in the electrical areas.

Keep us posted.

+3,

Are you going to run this as a thread, for your build?
And, where did you find the ez-31?

I got it on eBay. There is still one available from the same guy. I think I got a good price because it has no remote and the box has been opened, but I hate remotes, so I don't care.

There are some available on Amazon for $100 shipped.

Yeah, sure, I'll take pics of my build and post here. It probably won't be pretty though.

I made a BOM, but being as this is my first electronics project, I don't know if I am right. I asked for a cut and dry BOM and the guy told me to just read the thread. Can someone savvy check this and explain some things to me?

The BG FK 2200/35 is a Black Gate 2200 uf 35 v. capacitor of the FK series. The other capacitors are also Black Gates and the same value reference is used but they are of a different series, STD and N series. The resistors are 300 ohm and 100 ohm Dale (don't know the wattage needed) and the other resistors mentioned are Vishay S102 and Caddock.
If I get a chance to read the thread, I'd probably know more about suggestions on parts. The Black Gates, if available, are some of the best. Dale or Caddock are good resistors.

BARRAGE of questions...

The schematic show external PS. Two wires from PS are connected to the pads where choke was. Since BG FK is hard to find these days, I use BG STD with BG N 4.7uF bypass... in place of C916 I instal BG N, either 47/50 or 33/16 depending on availability.

Did I make an accurate list based on the quote and schematic as far as the electrical components go?

What is a "bypass"?

Also, is this saying I need two transformers or one?
The transformer I was thinking of using, and recommended by Peter Daniel, (Hammond 229D20) is 48 VA. The schematic above says 96 VA and "2x".

What is a "TOC" switch?

How do I find out the resistor wattage?

What type/gauge wire should I get?

I had no idea the capacitors were discontinued in 2006... what's with this hobby and people liking discontinued things? Strangely, the ones he said would be scarce are available and the ones he said would be available are not. How do I find a source or replacement for the BG STD 1000/25?

You just want to see me fail... :tears:

Are you the same thefragger as the one on Head-fi that makes tons of cables?

I am on head-fi, but I don't make cables! Mysterious!! :scratch2:

I'm just following along with this thread because the project looks interesting-- I'm actively seeking one of those JVC boomboxes now. :thmbsp:

Yes, it seems good.

What is a "bypass"?
It is a small value capacitor that allows current to bypass the larger cap.

Also, is this saying I need two transformers or one?

I don't know the context of this reference but if Peter Daniel suggests the use of that transformer, I would think it to be correct. It might be that the two secondaries are tied in series to double the output (2 x 48 = 96).

What is a "TOC" switch?
Table of Contents? A part of the CD format heirarchy relating to how the disc is compiled.

How do I find out the resistor wattage?
This would be based on the circuit that the resistor is in. I am reading the thread and P. Daniels states "One other thing, the output resistors are quite important, I got the best results with Caddock MK132 75R to ground and VishayS102 60R (or similar value) in series."

What type/gauge wire should I get?
At the most, 14 ga. but smaller would more than likely be OK.

These guys have the STD 1000/50 or 1000/16 in stock.

If you missed it, this looks like a pretty definitive list of the modifications

Table of Contents doesn't seem right.
"There is additional TOC switch mounted on a side (normally closed type)."

I got a PM from Peter:
2 output resistors, 300 and 100, 1/4W
1 display resistor, 10K, 1/2W+

Okay, I didn't know I could fudge it a bit on the cap size. Is it better to go a little bigger or a little smaller? Peter also recommended Panasonic FC or Elma Silmics. The Sonic-Craft site appears to be out of date - "we will be working hard in 2009..." I emailed them a day ago and they have not responded.

Thanks for the link!

This appears to be a switch, normally closed, that allows the circuit to open when the mounting plate of disc drive is in place? Could it be "toggle open close"?

Usually better to go bigger. As long as in-rush current is not going to be a problem and, in this case, the current is not that large. IOW, you can go from 1000uf/25 to 1000uf/50 with no problem. Panasonic FC are a good grade of cap. The Blackgates are not being made anymore, AFAIK, and might be hard to find. AK sponsor Partsconnexion used to carry them. Maybe an email off to them might turn up a Blackgate.

PartsCon, doesn't have 1000/25BG's but does have Elnas(super cap)
I was going to add w/any questions post up or PM Peter @DIYAud,
I'm sure he'd helpw/ay details.
