technics sl-1100 arm change

when trying to put my grado cartdrige on found that the arm would`t float balance so as to be able to adjust tracking force. Found left side oarm was missing 2 of the 5 bearings and that the inner bearing collar inside the arm was detoriated. SO i put mmy trio 350 arm and after much adjusting it works fantastic!:banana: pics of it spinning now thing about it is if the sl-1100 goes bad for motor i can put the arm back in the belt drive trio 350!:yes:

arm playing

had to bring the cartridge forward about half inch and tilt it inward a bit to adjust for the small change of curvatures of the arms to get the tracking angle right. its effective length is now 9.75 inches versus 9.6(244)mm but this is a good arm the cables actually plug into bottom of the arm. and the arm bearings in it are the finest i`ve ever come across. this table now sounds as good or better than my friends thorens that he has with a black widow infinity arm!:music: another good thing is the arm lift works and of course i didn`t have to change the arm board!

Whats with the night light? Did your strobe burn out?
 
trio 350 arm

The trio arm is from a TRIO 350 turntable manual belt idler clone of early thorens by parent company of kenwood Trio the 350 is an old turntable and was only sold in Japan. Hence it was brought back by a serviceman. Extremely rare turntable. Very good arm system. I`m glad i didn`t have to mutilate the table to take the arm out. I can always put the arm back in it and use it again. TRIO made some very expensive turntables do a internet search on them to see! So when i grabbed the Trio 350 off of Ebay a few years ago for $60.00 i was so happy! I put a new belt on it and it is areal world class performer. It has an oil reservoir cup to the motor and wicks down to the motor bearings. i bought the technics sl-1100 for 50.00 so with all the dynamatting mods i did on it and the cost of the arm out of trio and grado cartridge i have 250.00 in the modded sl-1100. I put the nite lite on it because it had no strobe, and for 3.00 it functions as good as a strobe lite. the outlet it plugs into is a 120 volt outlet and the table has a 120 volt other accessary outlet in the rear.:music: also the old trio arm being so old used heavy cartridges which is all they had in them days with heavy counter weight also. to mod for this i had to put a nickel on the head shell and put some dynamat tar over the nickel cuz its black like the head shell. for the anti skate i used a fish hook with a 1 gram sinker weight hanging off the front of the arm to the left right after the arm bearings in the front. might seem odd but i have 20 hours into this mod figuring it out and doing it. the sound is very sweet tho. I`m happy

arm protracters

downloaded arm protracters from vinylengine to help me with the arm sweep alignment they have alot of different ones for thorens rega and technics and generic protracters also. have been into stereo`s since i was 16 years old now am 55 so not a new kid on the block i take in all the free info to help me along lifes path:yes:

At some point I'd like to make a strobe. It's a simple design, could be crafted from wood and spare parts.
 
if it beats the ugly looking 3.00 one i bought let me know what u come up with. to bad technics don`t have any ones stock for the sl-1100 but after over 30+ years you can`t expect that.
 
was able to fix the bearing problem with the EPA-110 arm and put it back on. Used a method i have used before for the fix. Found a longer bearing tensioner screw and took the crushed bearings out and wadded up cotton from a qtip into bearing area inside tightly and put a drop of oil in to get the cotton lubed. then carefully put new bearing pin screw in so it was centered inside the packed cotton. tightened it enuf to let the screw get centered inside makeshift cotton bearing. as i had done this years ago on an old belt drive with bad one side bad bearings the little trick worked again. the arm is flush and level and float balances to adjust cartridge weight. Put the TRIO arm back in its rightful home and now am pretty proud.:music:
